Former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ilorin Branch, Chief Rafiu Balogun, has called on his professional colleagues, particularly alumni of the University of Ilorin, to prioritize mentoring their younger counterparts, especially undergraduates.
Chief Balogun emphasized that mentorship is essential to complement the financial contributions being made by some alumni to their alma mater.
Speaking with journalists during the University of Ilorin Ambassadors’ Investiture, Distinguished Alumni and Award Ceremony, Balogun highlighted the significance of giving back through service.
Balogun, who also serves as the North Central Chairman of the Red Cross Society of Nigeria and Chairman of the Kwara State chapter, noted that rendering service to humanity should be a duty for all successful professionals.
“In the Red Cross, one of our seven principles is humanity. Service to humanity is key; it is very paramount. As Chairman of the Red Cross in Kwara State and the North Central zone, I fully align with what Kuliyan Gerin said, that we must give back to society,” he said.
He added: “I may not be wealthy, but I provide mentorship to younger colleagues and students through the Law Society. In fact, I was the one who established the Law Society during my tenure as President in 1996/97. We mentored them and still give back, whether through knowledge-sharing, materials, financial support, or guidance. Giving back is not about money alone.”
Chief Balogun expressed his full support for the culture of giving back, stressing that success in life should come with a sense of responsibility.
“You cannot say because you have succeeded and amassed wealth, you shouldn’t give back. God will judge, and you will be held accountable. As Professor Oloyede rightly said, we must all render accounts,” he stated.
He concluded by appreciating the University of Ilorin for the recognition, noting that it is an evident to the positive representation alumni have given the institution.
“We appreciate Unilorin because they believe we have been good ambassadors of the university. That’s why we were honoured,” he said.
