A Consultant Epidemiologist and Community Physician, Prof ‘Kabir Durowade, of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti has cautioned against the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Telemedicine (TM) in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Durowade made the call in Offa, Offa Local Government Area of Kwara, at the 6th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Scientific Conference of Offa Doctors Forum (ODF).
He described AI as an interdisciplinary field; which creates human-like intelligence artificially spanning computer science, mathematics, neuroscience, and linguistics.
He said: “Artificial intelligence systems are capable of generating novel text, images, videos, or other outputs, typically based on foundational mode and has the potential to solve some of the world’s most complex problems.
“AI stands poised to redefine patient care, improve outcomes, and alleviate the burdens on healthcare professionals,” he said.
According to him, AI is rapidly transforming various sectors, and healthcare is no exception.
Durowade observed that Telemedicine offers a window through which medical care can be accessed remotely using technology.
He explained that telemedicine is a digital health channel which involves video calls, messaging or even mobile apps, adding that it is gaining popularity and gathering momentum in Nigeria.
He also lamented that shortage of human resources for health over the years; the Japa syndrome which has widened doctor-population ratio in Nigeria.

The expert pointed out that the high disease burden, low doctor-patient ratio among others, are windows of
leverage for the use of AI and TM in healthcare delivery.
Earlier in his opening address, the President of the Offa Doctors, Dr. Rasheed Odunola reiterated the significance of the conference, adding that the Forum is marking the 7th year of formation and hosting of its 1st Scientific Conference.
He said: “The Offa Doctors’ is a non-political and purpose-driven professional body established with a clear vision for service, unity, and community development.
“Since its inception, members and successive executives of this great forum have remained committed to ensuring that its goals and objectives are diligently pursued,” he said.
Odunola stated that the Forum has achieved some milestones among which are renovation of heath centres, sustaining and improving on its monthly radio health enlightenment programme across the state.
He listed other achievements to include award of scholarships to indigent medical students, commissioning of its Secretariat and the creation of a comprehensive database of Offa medical doctors globally among others.
According to him, unofficial records suggest that there are over 300 medical doctors of Offa origin globally.
He however, disclosed that only about 100 are financial members of this forum with 106 members have been fully captured in the database, adding that this remains an area for collective improvement.
The President of the Forum reiterates the commitment of the members towards improving the healthcare delivery of people in Offa, it’s environs and Kwara as a whole.
