The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has engaged students of the Kwara State University (KWASU) on entrepreneurship and vocational skills.
The programme was organised by the Centre for Technical, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training of KWASU in collaboration with SON.
Speaking at a One-Day Entrepreneurship Summit for Freshers of KWASU, Dr Ifeanyi Okeke, the Director-General (D-G), SON, sensitized the students on becoming young entrepreneurs even at micro level.
He spoke on the topic: “Understanding the Regulatory and Statutory Requirements of Standards Organisation of Nigeria.
Okeke, who was represented by the Kwara State Coordinator, SON, Mr Ayenioye Feyisayo, explained that Youth entrepreneurship programs in Nigeria play a crucial role in fostering economic growth, reducing unemployment, and driving innovation.
He pointed out that vocational initiatives will help equip the students with the skills, resources, and opportunities needed to succeed in today’s competitive market.
Okeke also sensitized the students on the core values of the organisation which includes customer focus, integrity and team-work.
He advised the students that in starting small businesses, they must ensure quality compliance must be established, approved, complemented and maintained.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of KWASU, Prof. Sheykh-Luqman Jimoh explained that the summit is targeted at the institution’s freshmen.
Jimoh who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Olubukola Dada pointed out that the aim is to nurture the entrepreneurial vision of the students.
“This is to build an entrepreneurial mindset early and to help students recognise opportunities, understand regulatory frameworks and appreciate the importance of standards and compliance,” he said.
