The University of Ilorin recently hosted its inaugural international conference, FAPSCON 2024, focusing on “Renewable Energy and Clean Environment: Panacea for Sustainable Development.”
Held from June 4th to 8th, 2024, this hybrid event combined in-person and virtual participation, attracting a diverse group of international scholars, industry leaders, government officials, and media representatives. The conference served as a platform for discussing and developing actionable insights on renewable energy and environmental sustainability.
The conference which was organised by the Faculty of Physical Sciences, was a landmark event that brought together a global community of experts and stakeholders dedicated to addressing the critical challenges of renewable energy and environmental sustainability. Through its comprehensive programme, high-profile speakers, and interactive sessions, the conference significantly contributed to the discourse on sustainable development and laid the groundwork for future advancements in the field.
The conference began with warm welcoming remarks from Prof. Olusegun O. Ige, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee. He emphasized the significance of FAPSCON 2024 in addressing global environmental challenges and highlighted the role of the Faculty of Physical Sciences in advancing research and solutions for sustainable development. “FAPSCON-2024 is not just a technical symposium but a celebration of our collective commitment to a cleaner, greener future,” he stated.
Prof. Ige also emphasized the strategic alignment of the conference theme with the university’s vision 1:10:500 and the faculty’s vision 1:1:10:500. He stressed the urgent need for impactful solutions to environmental stresses such as greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.
On his part, Prof. BABA Abdullahi Alafara, Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences, reiterated the urgency of addressing renewable energy and environmental sustainability. He praised the university’s leadership and the organizing committee for their dedication to making the conference a reality.
“Our theme underscores the important role that renewable energy and a clean environment play in driving sustainable development,” he remarked, encouraging participants to engage in meaningful dialogue and collaboration.
The conference was officially declared open by Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, Vice Chancellor of the University, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Olubunmi Abayomi Omotesho. He emphasized the integral role of energy in human survival and sustainable development.
“Sustainable development must meet the needs of the present without compromising the future,” he stressed, aligning the conference objectives with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
A series of compelling keynote addresses set the tone for the conference. Senator Saliu Mustapha, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Production, Services and Rural Development, highlighted the intersection of renewable energy and food security in his address on “Food Security for Sustainable Development in Nigeria: A Policy Framework.” He advocated for leveraging renewable energy solutions to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability.
Dr. Bankim Chandra Tripathy from the Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, India, discussed the importance of recycling industrial waste and utilizing lean-grade ores in achieving sustainable development. His insights underscored the environmental and economic benefits of a circular economy.
Dr. Jude Majasan of the Electrochemical Innovation Laboratory at University College London focused on technological advancements needed for the broader adoption of renewable energy sources. He emphasized the critical role of power storage technologies in maximizing the effectiveness of solar and wind energy solutions.
FAPSCON 2024 featured over 200 critically reviewed abstracts presented by scholars from around the world. Sessions covered a wide range of topics including innovative renewable energy technologies, sustainable environmental practices, and policies for sustainable development. Attendees engaged in robust discussions, shared research findings, and explored potential collaborations to address global sustainability challenges.
In addition to technical sessions, the conference included awards of excellence to outstanding alumni and the conferment of fellowships on distinguished faculty members. Social activities provided opportunities for networking and cultural exchange, enriching the conference experience.
Interactive sessions and workshops facilitated deeper understanding and practical application of discussed topics. These sessions encouraged active participation and collaboration among attendees.
