Kwara records best performance in humanitarian, community development – FOMWAN

The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), Kwara Chapter, has been recognized as the best-performing state in the areas of community development and humanitarian activities.

The Amirah of the Association, Hajia Nimat Labaika, stated this while delivering her address in Ilorin at the formal opening ceremony of the Step Down of the 39th Annual National Conference.

She explained that the Annual Ramadan community outreach and women empowerment earned the state the accolade in performance.

“We also partnered with some international NGOs to carry out various health intervention programs like awareness creation, prevention, and eradication of malaria, HIV, and TB in the community.

“Through this, we have been able to empower 100 people living with HIV and AIDS.

“Indigent women who are also petty traders across the 16 LGAs were empowered through zakat and donations collected from philanthropists,” she said.

Labaika appealed to philanthropists to help the Association do more in terms of humanitarian activities in the state.

She described the theme of the conference as apt, adding that it is a tradition of FOMWAN to organize a rotational Annual conference for members across the states of the Federation to gather to address contemporary issues as they affect the Muslim Ummah.

In his Lecture, Prof.Abdulquadir Abikan, the new Director-General and member of the Council of the National Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), Abuja observed that Muslim women stand as representatives of a collective struggle against a pervasive issue that transcends borders and beliefs.

Speaking on the theme: “Women and the Challenges of Insecurity”, Abikan said insecurity is not merely a statistic; but a live reality for many women around the world.

He observed that women are the worst victims of insecurity in any nation, adding that women of all ages are confronted with femicide.

Abikan, who was represented by Dr Muhammad Kamaldeen of the Department of Islamic Law, University of Ilorin described femicide as the intentional killing of women because they are women by men.

“Femicide is both a violation of human rights and a persistent global issue rooted in violence.

“Despite legal frameworks aimed at protecting women, femicide remains disturbingly prevalent. In 2022, the United Nations recorded 89,000 intentional killings of women and girls worldwide, with 55 percent of these murders committed by intimate partners or individuals close to the victim,” he said.

The expert in Law also pointed out that women can also be complacent in creating situations that result in insecurity of not only themselves but everyone at large.

He emphasized the crucial role that women play in societal development and the creation of the moral fiber of society.

According to him, individuals who end up as terrorists, armed robbers, kidnappers, fraudsters, criminals, and miscreants were all birthed by their mothers in the same way as other individuals who meaningfully contribute to society.

“The security challenges we are experiencing cannot be divorced from the breakdown of the family unit where the position of women as the first school of their children, according to Prophet Muhammad (SAW), has been left to decline.

“In several homes, women are faced with economic and emotional challenges that shift their focus from the care and appropriate training of the young minds to other material challenges.

“This is not to say that women should not be professionals outside of their homes, but the Islamic position is that a woman should not be constrained to fend for herself and her children to the detriment of the care of the young children,” he said.

He appealed to men to form a united front with women in understanding their roles in fostering safe environments for all.

“We must work together- across faiths and backgrounds dismantle the structures that perpetuate violence against women,” he said.

Also speaking, Abdullahi Ghali, Lecturer at the College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies (CAILS), stated that issues of security must start from the grassroots, individual, family level, and government levels.

He also appealed to women and mothers to give the best training to their children as dictated by the Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference includes free medical checkups, HIV/AIDs screening, hypertension, as well as free medication.

FOMWAN mentors 97 youths in Kwara on spirituality, moral guidance

The Federation of the Muslim Women’s Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN) have trained 97 youths from across the 16 Local Government Area of Kwara on spiritual and moral guidance.

Speaking at the Step Down of FOMWAN Annual Zonal Youth Camp, in Ilorin, the Chief lmam of Kwara State University (KWASU) Malete, Prof. Hamzat AbdulRaheem, called on parents to inculcate moral values on their children to make them useful in the society.

The Chief Imam spoke on the topic entitled: “Quran As Compass”.

AbdulRaheem who was the Immediate Past Dean, School of Post Graduate of KWASU, observed that the programme is crucial, as trains girls on values and God-consciousness.

According to him, the girl-child are the future mothers of the society and there is need for them to be enlightened and well informed on what is expected of them as good citizens of the nation.

“We expect that women in our society should brace up. They should put the fear of Allah in the way they think, behave and act.

“The society expect more from them and they should not disappoint their communities,” he said.

Also speaking, Dr. Mahmud Danjuma, a cleric and Guest Lecturer of the Occasion, enjoined the youths to follow the teachings of the Holy Quran,.as thought by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

Danjuma advised them to apply what is being learnt in their personal lives and also in contributing positively to their communities and the society at large.

He emphasized on the role of the Quran in shaping moral values, decision making, and leadership.

The cleric likened the Quran to a compass, which provides direction and clarity in a world filled with distractions and uncertainties.

Speaking earlier, Naibat Amerah of FOMWAN, Hajia Bilkis Oladimeji urged the youth to always have mentor to look upon them in achieving their future goals.

Oladimeji explained that FOMWAN aimed at inspiring and equipping young girls to become self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to the society.

Hijrah: FOMWAN congratulates Muslims, urges FG to declare 1st Muharram as national prayer day

The Federation of Muslim Women Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has called on the Federal Government to declare 1st Muharram as a day for national prayer for the country.

The National Amirah, Hajia Rafiah Idowu made the call in a statement to commemorate the new Hijrah Year (Muharram) 1446.

Muharram is the Muslim’s first lunar month.

The Association noted that as the country was going through the trying period, there is a serious need for both the leaders and the led to go back to Almighty Allah and seek for His intervention.

The statement particularly urged the government to ensure price control of food items with a view to addressing the problem of hunger ravaging the nation.

The statement also implored the government at all levels and security agencies to intensify more efforts in combating insecurity in the country.

While congratulating Muslim ummah on the commencement of new Islamic calendar, the statement urged Muslims to imbibe the lessons of Hijrah which include tolerance, perseverance, steadfastness and fear of Allah.

FOMWAN also urged Nigerians to use the Hijrah celebration to pray for divine guidance for the country’s leadership.

The Association stressed the need for the government especially Sokoto state government to honour and respect the Sultan of Sokoto as head of Muslims in the country in addition to being the traditional ruler.

FOMWAN appreciated the consistent support of the Sultan of Sokoto for women’s development and empowerment and activities of the Association among others.

FOMWAN commended the state governments that had declared 1st Muharram as work-free day including Kwara and urged other states to emulate them.

Economic crisis: FOMWAN empowers indigents in Kwara

The Federation of Muslim Women Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN), Kwara State chapter, has empowered indigents across the 16 Local Government Area of the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme, is part of activities to mark the 2024 FOMWAN Week.

Hajia Biliqees Oladimeji, the Kwara State Naibah Amirah, explained that the empowerment included distribution of cash gift to the beneficiaries in order to aid their businesses.

According to her, the gesture was to help alleviate the economic challenges and poverty among the women in Kwara.

Oladimeji said the theme of theme of the week entitled: “Economic Empowerment for Indigents: A Life-Changing Venture for Self-Reliance and Poverty Alleviation”, is centred on self-improvement in one’s abilities.

She explained that the association has continued to provide entrepreneurial and vocational skills to women to become self-reliant.

Oladimeji added that the FOMWAN has been very passionate about the welfare of women, children, less privileged, orphans and widows in the country.

“As the world is going through economic crisis, women need to be patient and rely on Almighty Allah.

“The best solution to get through the challenges is to rely on God and seek for His mercy,” she said.

She warned that Islam does not encourage begging, while emphasizing on the meed for well meaning organisations to reach out to the needy.

Also speaking, Dr Lawal Olohungbebe, the Senior Special Assistant to Kwara State Governor, on Community Development, stated that economic empowerment is very crucial at this time where people were struggling to meet the daily needs.

He explained that the present administration has always prioritized women and girls welfare in the state through many empowerment schemes.

Olohungbebe stressed the need for individuals and organizations to complement government efforts in improving the affairs of the less privileged.

He urged women to engage themselves in professional skills and embrace any business opportunity that will make them self-reliant.

FOMWAN urges ECOWAS to reconsider sanctions following Niger coup

In the aftermath of the recent coup in Niger Republic, the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has called on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to reconsider its approach towards the crisis.

With the imposition of sanctions and the looming threat of military intervention, Muslim women in Nigeria are urging restraint and a more comprehensive assessment of the situation.

FOMWAN, a united voice for Muslim women in Nigeria emphasized the need for ECOWAS to consider the broader implications of its actions, particularly in terms of political and economic stability in the region.

In its press release signed by the National Amirah, Sanni Rafiah ldowu and National PRO, Hon Maimuna Momodu, the organization acknowledged that the measures taken, such as border closures and electricity cuts, have severe repercussions on the livelihoods of citizens, exacerbating the existing poverty crisis in Niger Republic, a country already grappling with high levels of poverty.

One of the key concerns raised by FOMWAN is the far-reaching impact of sanctions, not only on Niger Republic but also on neighboring nations such as Burkina Faso, Mali, Chad, Benin Republic, and Nigeria.

The northern states of Nigeria, which share borders with Niger Republic, have already been affected by various challenges including insurgency, banditry, and kidnappings.

FOMWAN argued that imposing sanctions at this juncture could further undermine the well-being of these communities and hinder their development.

Additionally, FOMWAN draws attention to the vulnerability of women and children in conflict situations. The organization cites alarming figures of displacement in West and Central African Republic, with millions of women and children forced to bear the brunt of instability and violence.

FOMWAN called on ECOWAS to prioritize the protection of these vulnerable groups and work towards stabilizing the region through peaceful means.

FOMWAN advocated for a diplomatic approach rather than military intervention, emphasizing that dialogue is the most effective way to address the crisis.

The organization underscored the need for ECOWAS to engage with internal stakeholders in Niger Republic to facilitate a return to democratic governance.

FOMWAN also urged ECOWAS member countries to prioritize good governance, transparency, and accountability as key drivers of sustainable development and democracy in the region.

FOMWAN’s underscored the unity of purpose among Muslim women in Nigeria in seeking a peaceful resolution to the situation in Niger Republic.

As ECOWAS navigates this critical juncture, the call from FOMWAN adds a significant voice to the dialogue, emphasizing the importance of considering the long-term implications of actions taken in response to the coup in Niger Republic.

FOMWAN congratulates Tinubu/Shettima, advocates 50% appointments to women

A non-profit civil society group for Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria, the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN), has felicitated with the President-elect, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Vice President-elect, Senator Kashim Shettima on their victory at the presidential election.

The National Amirah of FOMWAN, Hajia Rafiah Idowu Sanni conveyed the group’s message in a press statement signed by the National PRO, Hajia Maimuna momodu and released to the media today.

The Muslim Women’s group also lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting free, fair and credible election in the recent history of Nigeria.

The group implored all political parties and their candidates who are not satisfied with the outcome of the election to take their grievances to the designated court of law and desist from instigative statements that can cause further pain among citizens.

Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria, however, urge the administration of Tinubu/Shettima to consider giving 50% appointments to the Nigerian women in appreciation of their supports during the campaign and subsequent elections.

While lamenting that the Nigerian political system has not been fair to the women which is evident with the insignificant number of seats won by women at the national assemblies as well as appointments made into cabinets, FOMWAN believes that the neither the All Progressive Congress (APC) nor their oppositions can win a polling unit without the massive votes from the women folk.

The group appealed to the President- elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Vice President-elect, Senator Kashim Shettima to make a difference by ensuring that competent women from across cultural and religious divide are considered into appropriate positions.

FOMWAN appeals to the President elect to run an open door administration to consider policies that will ameliorate the present hardship being faced by the citizens of Nigeria.

The Group also encouraged the duo of Ahmed Tinubu and Kashim Shettima to remember their campaign promises that made innocent Nigerians who are desperate for positive change to consider them as their preferred candidates, reminding that non-fulfilment of promise is a sin in Islam.

This is as FOMWAN encourages Nigerians irrespective of culture, religion or class to give the Tinubu and Shettima administration the benefit of doubt. Also, Nigerians are encouraged to support them with supplications and beseech Almighty Allah to guide and guard the new Nigerian leaders to the the right path towards Good Governance.

The Muslim Women group, however, pledged their unflinching spiritual and moral supports for the new leadership.

FOMWAN, UN Women, Canada Grant strengthen capacity of Kwara women on 2023 General election

The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), with the support from UNWomen and Canada yesterday in Ilorin organized high level advocacy for Religious, community Leaders on the consequences of gender based violence and significance of electing credible Leaders in the forthcoming elections.

In her opening address, Hajia Rafiah Sanni, the National Amirah of FOMWAN stated that the subject matter of the programme was to sensitize women and other stakeholders on the coming general elections in Nigeria and discuss on proactive steps on Gender based violence.
She explained that Kwara is one of the three states identified for implementation of this project, adding that FOMWAN with the support of United Nations (UN) Women and Canada powered the mobilization and sensitization of women for the 2023 elections.

According to her, the programme is a high level advocacy forum with experts and different stakeholders expected to help foster good governance, gender and active participation of women in the electoral process.

Speaking on the theme: “Consequences of Gender-Based Violence and the Significance of Electing Credible Leaders”.

Sanni who was represented by Hajia Jemila Ariori, member, FOMWAN Elections and civic responsibilities committee said; that the project focused on Mobilization and Sensitization of Women in the 2023 General Elections, added that the overall goals of the project is to contribute to effective women’s participation in free, fair and violence free elections through interfaith actions.

She emphasised on the need to counter gender based violence during all elections especially as it affects women and girl child during and after elections.

The FOMWAN president reiterated on the importance of electing credible leaders by participating on the 2023 elections process so as to increase capacity of the community leaders and faith based women on curbing gender based violence.

Speaking also, Hajia Ni’mat Labaika, the Kwara State Amirah of FOMWAN pointed out that the organisation is an umbrella body of all Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria with branches across the thirty six states including FCT Abuja, and kwara branch

She explained that the faith based organisation has secured support from UN Women to implement a project on mobilization, sensitization and countering gender based violence before, during and after 2023 general elections.

“FOMWAN in the past decades has been actively involved in civic education and election observers across all the 36 states of the federation including FCT.

“Our ability to mobilize our members in the rural communities to actively participate in the electioneering process cannot be overemphasized,” she said.

Also speaking, the Resource person on Advocacy, Head of Centre Federal ministry of information and Culture, Hajia Bilqees Oladimeji, called for effective advocacy towards effecting the expected change. She urge the identified stakeholders to utilise the regular preaching at their worship centres to support women developmental issues on increase voice for women Leadership.
She lamented that the bureaucratic barricade that hinders women participation in the elections and urge the three tiers of Government to put in place Conducive empowerment for women.

“The rights of women must not be tampered and addressed as human issues. Women participation in politics is very fundamental,” she said.

Mrs Oluremi Chiroma, representative of INEC in Kwara, who commended FOMWAN for their effective mobilization and regular update on the INEC Platform on need to collect voters card as step for voting. added that women voice must be heard and should be allowed active participation in Nigerian politics.

Chiroma submitted that women don’t want to be in competition with their male counterparts but partners in the development of the country.

In his reaction, Oba Abdulrazak Iyiolasemi III, the Olojoku of Ojoku land said women must be empowered fir effective partaking in politics adding that majority of women are instrument to electing men in power.

FOMWAN extends condolences to Al Mu’minaat on members’ death

The Federation of Muslim Womens Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has extended deepest condolences to the Al Mu’minaat Organization over a fatal motor accident that claimed lives of its members.

In a condolence message signed by the association’s National Amirah, Hajiya Rafiah ldowu Sanni and National Secretary, Dr Monsurat Titilayo Musa, the Board of Trustees (BoTs), National Executive Council (NEC) and the entire members of FOMWAN expressed their condolences on the demise of the Organization’s members that died in a fatal motor accident that happened on their way to AI Mu’minaat Training Forum holding at Vanguards Academy, Odosengolu, ljebu-Ode, Ogun State, last year.

According to the condolence message, “this is indeed a trial for the bereaved families and the Muslim Ummah in general but we believe that: Surely we belong to Allaah and verily, to Him do we return”.

The message, however, prayed Allaah to grant the deceased Aljannah Firdaus and give their families the fortitude to bear the loss.

Vote only credible candidates, FOMWAN urges women, tasks FG on security

Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has called on Muslim women to actively involve in creating awareness on peaceful elections and ensuring election of credible candidates that will entrench good governance and enhance the well-being of citizens.

The foremost Muslim women’s organisation stated this at the 37th FOMWAN Annual National Conference held at Federal Government College, Rumuokoro, Rivers State from 8th – 11th September 2022.

While also lamenting on the devastating effect of insecurity in Nigeria, FOMWAN tasked the government at all levels to put in place a robust architecture to address the issue of insecurity in Nigeria.

FOMWAN, however, called on all Nigerians to take the issue of Community and National security seriously and to be actively involved in finding ways of ensuring security of human lives and property.

In a communique issued at the end of the conference, FOMWAN lamented on the high rate of inflation, economic challenges affecting the Nation which have impacted negatively on women and youths.

The faith based organisation also expressed concern about the serious gap that exists between generations which has affected social and National Development in the society.

“We observe the negative use of the social media which is eroding social values and adversely affecting the youths”, the communique read.

The organisation, which expressed its dismay on inadequate involvement of Muslim women in politics and in policy making positions, called on women to participate in politics with fear of Almighty Allah, taking cognizance of Islamic Rights without jeopardizing their morality and motherly roles.

It also persuaded the government and the general populace to shun ethnic and religious bigotry in politics while promoting the culture of tolerance and understanding.

While calling on relevant institutions to be put in place a regulatory measures on the use of social media in Nigeria, FOMWAN advocated that mentorship should be mainstreamed in our individual lives, the Nigerian curriculum at all levels and fast tracked by the Nigerian Education Resource Development Center and other relevant institutions.

This year’s conference was attended by 600 Muslim Women from across 28 states in Nigeria including FCT Abuja.

The theme and sub-themes for the conference are: “Bridging inter-Generational Gaps for Sustainable Development: Spectrum of opportunities using the Islamic lens”.

i. Developing an effective framework for enhancing sustainable livelihood.

ii. Mentorship as a tool for empowerment and leadership sustainability

ii. Entrenching Good Governance in public affairs; – a panacea for ensuring security and equity

The opening ceremony which was held at Obi Wali International Conference Center, Port- Harcourt, was attended by the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR; The Special Adviser to the Governor of Rivers State on Youth & Sports, Mr. Awwal Ogiri, who represented the Executive Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, CON.

The keynote was presented by Professor Abdulrazaq O. Kelani, (FCA) of the University of Port-Harcourt, while the the occasion was Chaired by Alhaji Taiwo Mustapha.

The conference was attended by Muslim Scholars across the State, Government Functionaries and traditional leaders from the community.

FOMWAN, UNFPA, Canada intensify campaign against Female Genital Mutilation

Burdened by the existing practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the country, the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) in collaboration with other organisations have intensified efforts to wage war against the practice in families across the country.

The sensitisation and awareness programmes against FGM with the support from UNFPA, Global Affairs Canada, development partners, implementing partners and relevant stakeholders to stop the surge of the harmful customary traditional practice was recently held at Gudugbu Community in Oyo West Local Government.

The Oyo West community and other members of the society were advised by the government, international agencies, security establishments and FOMWAN on total abstinence from female genital mutilation.

Representatives of the Oyo State Government, Mrs Balikis Olawoyin of the Ministry of Health (Primary Health Care) and Mrs Justina Oladoye from the Centre for Population and Reproductive Health, University College Hospital were at the signing and Presentation of the Certificate to the Community Leader (Baale Gudugbu) Chief Salawu Abu Oyeniran. The duo urge the FGM Champions and the Surveillance team to report attempts by offenders. The trained team were advised not to romance cultural Stereotype Assumptions that embrace female genital mutilation in society.

It was pointed out that adequate and early reports of transgressors are highly needed to prevent future damage to the Girlchild. Liable offenders will face the court of Law to pay fines and possible imprisonment.

An appeal went to immediate neighbours, friends, and the society at large to influence positive change to stop the cutting of the girlchild.

Alhaja Airat Ogungbenro – the FOMWAN CPN Committee Chairperson & FGM Project Coordinator – enjoined all not to relent in sensitizing the Community at large to save the future of the Girl Child’s Physical Emotional and psychological health.

While giving the overview program report on FGM on House-house, Door-door, and household discussions at community Levels, the FOMWAN State Amirah Dr Oloso B. B ably represented by Comr. Mrs Ojo Monsurat Toyin described the Oyo West FGM abandonment project as a Core- goal achievement and huge success with a positive result, oriented towards FGM Abandonment.

Among others who joined to denounce the Abandonment of FGM/C at the Public Declaration ceremony were relevant law enforcement and agencies – NSCDC, Amotekun, Nigeria Correctional Centre, Nigerian Immigration Service and the Nigerian Police officers.

This program that started in 2020, with advocacy visits paid to leaders Ojongbodu and Bola Communities of Oyo West on FGM.

Champions and Surveillance teams were identified and trained, which led to Public Declaration on the abandonment of FGM in which Ojongbodu and Bola Communities in November 2020 public declaration of Abandonment of the Practice of Female Genital Mutilation/C at the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo.

On 17th March 2022, the execution of the program started at Gudugbu Community.

The Cutting of the Girl Child at Gudugbu in Oyo West LG Area of Oyo State engages religious and community leaders, traditional rulers, health practitioners, and traditional birth attendants in support to advocate the abandonment of Female Genital Mutilation/C.
