Ahead of 2027 polls, Engineer Olabanji cautions Kwara South youths against activities of inordinate politicians

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara South Senatorial District, Engineer Opeyemi Olabanji has cautioned the youths against being used by inordinate politicians ahead of 2027 general elections.

Olabanji, while addressing the youth wing of the APC from Irepodun Local Government Area (LGA) of the state who yesterday paid him a yuletide visit at his Ijan-Otun country home said it was too early in the day for any politician to be stage managing the youths ahead of the elections.

According to the APC leader, any political activism laden with covert campaigns would be counter productive against the ruling APC led government in the state, especially the state Governor, Mallam AbdulRahaman AbdulRazaq said to be unfolding more of his people’s oriented programs.

The Irepodun APC youth leaders comprising of the local government youth leader , Mr Femi Alter and all the youth leaders of the 11 wards consisting of Oro 1, Oro 2, Ajase 1, Ajase 2, Esie/Ijan, Omu- Aran 1, Omu- Aran2, Omu- Aran 3, Oko, Arandun and Ipetu- Rore – Aran Orin were all at Ijan- Otun for the visit.

According to him, “it is too early for anyone to be talking of where the APC in the state has zoned her Governorship candidate for the 2027 Gubernatorial elections. The much talked about ‘Kwara South Senatorial District for Kwara North Senatorial District’ should not for now be in the political front burners.

“We should know that we are the party in power and we should not cause any distraction to governance. We are not God, anything could still happen between now and then. If it is the will of God, it will be smooth sailing. But if not, it can even be ‘Kwara North Senatorial District for Kwara South Senatorial District.'”

Olabanji therefore warned the youths against being cajoled into any political arrangement as the Governor who is the leader of the party in the state is yet to give his nod to any zoning arrangement, noting that AbdulRazaq was too busy with his policies churning out democratic dividends to the people of the state.

He noted, “don’t give your word to any politician now. We still have two more solid years to get to the election period. The Governor has no time for such a thing right now. He’s very busy fixing the state. Therefore, be focused and remain solid in your ideology.”

The leader of the entourage, Mr Femi Alter, thanked the APC chieftain for his words of caution and encouragement. He promised prompt imbibing of the advice and make the youths a solid block that would be difficult for inordinate politicians to penetrate

2027: Kwara South Youths disown proposed summit, accuses organizers of being political jobbers

In a recent development, the Kwara South Youth Congress has issued a strong statement disowning the proposed “Kwara South for Kwara North 2027 Agenda” summit, describing it as a “make-believe and cosmetic approach” aimed at pushing the agenda of a few individuals in the name of Kwara South.

The group, in a statement issued by its Coordinator, Ambassador Fola Daniel and made available to Daily Links today, accused the organizers of the summit of being “political jobbers” who are desperate to sell their paymasters’ agenda, which is geared towards reawakening godfatherism politics in Kwara State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the Kwara South Youths Congress, the proposed summit is “dead on arrival” due to its theme, which they described as “misleading” and “divisive.” The group stated that the theme, “A new dawn in Kwara quest for equity, fairness & justice: Kwara South for Kwara North (2027 Agenda),” is a clear indication that the summit is not about promoting the interests of Kwara South, but rather about advancing the personal interests of a few individuals, mainly within the state government mechanism.

The Kwara South Youths Congress also expressed concern that the summit is another partisan gathering to use the Kwara South name for political transactions without protecting the region’s interests. The group emphasized that they will not allow “political desperados” to trade with the Kwara South name and that they will continue to protect the interests of the region.

Furthermore, the Kwara South Youths Congress pointed out that the position of Nigeria’s Constitution is clear on zoning, and that there is no agreement on zoning of governorship in Kwara State. The group emphasized that competence, experience, and exposure should take center stage as the state approaches the 2027 electioneering process.

“We will not be party to any arrangement that seeks to undermine the interests of Kwara South,” said Ambassador Fola Daniel. “We urge all stakeholders to be cautious of the intentions of the organizers of the proposed summit, and to ensure that they are not used as pawns in their political games.”

Ambassador Fola Daniel questioned the lineup of the supposed conveners, asking relevant questions about the exclusion of notable leaders from Kwara South, which included: Sen. Oyelola Issa Ashiru (Deputy Senate President), Alhaji Oladimeji Abdulraheem (Jangunmolu Of Igomina land), Alhaji Tajudeen Owoyemi (Asiwaju of Offa land), Retired Admiral Azeez Bayo Afolayan ( Asiwaju of Oro Kingdom) and host of others, the group reiterated that the proposed summit is a political machinery sponsored by people in government using political jobbers.

The group further alleged that, in a meeting held on Tuesday, there were mainly people from the ruling party in the state.

However, the Kwara South Youths Congress advised Engr. Dr. Johnson B.O. Adewumi, founder of Thomas Adewunmi University, desist from being used as a political machinery for the actualization of a few individuals’ interests at the detriment of Kwara South.

“Dr. Adewunmi is a successful individual, and we are proud of him,” said Ambassador Fola Daniel. “It’s essential to remind him of the hypocrisy under his nose. We will not fold our arms while he is being used to play the divide-and-rule game in Kwara South. We have thousands of Adewunmi who will reject his new agenda.”

Hon. Tijani Ismail distributes motorcycles to security agencies, advocates for peace in Kwara South

In a bid to enhance security and foster collaboration with community leaders to promote peace in Kwara South, Hon. Tijani Kayode Ismail, representing Ifelodun/Offa/Oyun Federal Constituency in the 10th National Assembly, has emphasized the urgent need for cooperation to address growing security concerns, particularly the alarming rise in kidnapping and other criminal activities in the district.

Speaking at an event organized in collaboration with the National Orientation Agency (NOA), themed “Building a People of Peace,” Hon. Ismail called on traditional rulers to work within their powers and the law to maintain peace and security in their domains.

He urged royal fathers to remain actively engaged with their communities to curb kidnappings, theft, and other vices.

He also acknowledged the unrelenting efforts of security chiefs, vigilantes, and local hunters in keeping the area safe.

Commending the security personnel for their dedication, the lawmaker appealed to his constituents to stay vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities.

“The importance of security and peace cannot be overstated. We must all play our part to ensure safety in our communities,” Ismail stated.

To further strengthen security efforts, Hon. Ismail distributed motorcycles to security agencies to enhance their mobility in rural areas.

In addition, he presented three vehicles—an SUV Ford, a Benz space bus, and a Peugeot wagon—as well as palliatives to traditional rules and members of his constituency.

Earlier, the honourable had provided solar streetlights and farming equipment, including tractors, to support his constituents and promised to continue alleviating the hardships faced by his people.

Speaking at the event, Mallam Lanre Issa Onilu, Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), represented by Alhaji Dare AbdulGaniyu, NOA’s Kwara State Director, reiterated the critical role communication and dialogue play in maintaining peace and security.

Onilu emphasized the need for collective action against hate speech, separatist agitations, farmers/herders conflicts, and political and religious violence, all of which threaten Nigeria’s harmony.

“Without peace and security, progress and stability will be difficult to achieve in any community,” Onilu noted, advocating for dialogue as a crucial means of conflict resolution.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, Prince Sunday Adeniran Fagbemi, urged traditional rulers to continue supporting government efforts to tackle insecurity, stressing that peace is fundamental to societal progress.

In his message, Oba Dr. Olugbemiga Solomon, the Olusin of Isanlu Isin, who represented the traditional rulers, called on political leaders to empower the traditional institution with constitutional roles to help foster peace in the region.

The event witnessed goodwill messages from the police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other dignitaries, reinforcing the need for continued cooperation to safeguard peace and security in the region.

The programme, held at the Community Hall in Idofihan, brought together traditional rulers, security personnel, community leaders, NGOs, faith-based organizations, and youth representatives from Kwara South.

Various stakeholders commended Hon. Ismail for his commitment to ensuring peace and security in Kwara South and expressed gratitude for his support.

‘We are one big family,’ Senator Rafiu to PDP members in Kwara South

All seems to be falling in place for the Kwara South consensus candidate in the 2023 elections, Senator Rafiu Adebayo Ibrahim, who also represented his Senatorial District at the 8th Senate as he reconciled with the followers and supporters of the other senatorial aspirants under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, across the seven LGAs in the district.

The reconciliatory meeting was held on Saturday at the house of the former Kwara South Senatorial Chairman, Alhaji Jimoh Balogun, in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.Senator Rafiu during the meeting applauded members of the PDP, for their commitment and dedication to the ideals of the Party.

He also thanked them for their relentless sacrifices towards ensuring that the Party is victorious in all elections from Presidential, National Assembly, gubernatorial and state assembly elections in 2023.

The chairman Senate committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions in the 8th Senate, Dr Rafiu, however, appealed for further understanding among aspirants, their supporters and followers in the interest of the party and Kwara State at large.

He therefore, assured them of qualitative representation of the senatorial district.“I want to appeal to us in the spirit of Ramadan and Easter to forgive one another no matter what and move ahead. It is when we all work together and support one another that we can be sure of victory.

“I urge everyone to jettison individual interests, join hands in winning the elections to reset Nigeria and reclaim Kwara from this non-performing All Progressives Congress-led government in 2023.”

In their reactions, the aggrieved supporters expressed satisfaction with the manner the Senator handled the situation.

They noted that Senator Rafiu has handled the internal disagreement in a democratic way.

They thereafter assured the Party, Senator Rafiu and Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki of their utmost cooperation and support.

They said, having met with their respective aspirants after the consensus arrangement of the Party, they have resolved to collapse their individual structure for Senator Rafiu in the interest of the party and the people.

“We are willing and ready to work with Rafiu Ibrahim as one big family and we can assure you that we will do our best possible to ensure we are victorious.”

The group further noted that Senator Rafiu is highly loved by the people for his maturity, responsiveness, style of leadership and assurance of the dividends of democracy. “With these qualities, we are sure of his victory,” they said.

Everyone that spoke at the meeting specifically prayed for the aspiration of the PDP National Leader, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, to fly the flag of the Party and eventually become the President in 2023.

2023: Rafiu Ibrahim emerges consensus’ candidate of PDP Kwara South senatorial

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, Senator Rafiu Adebayo Ibrahim has emerged candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the Kwara South senatorial district. 

Rafiu who represented the district in the 8th Senate, emerged through a consensus arrangement, as announced by the leadership of the Kwara PDP. 

In his reaction to the development, Senator Rafiu appreciated the national leader of the PDP, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, leaders and members of the Party in Kwara South for the trust and privilege granted him to serve as the flag bearer of PDP in the senatorial election. 

He equally thanked other aspirants for their understanding and agreeing to his emergence as the consensus candidate of the PDP for Kwara South senatorial district. 

“Let me specially appreciate other Kwara South senatorial aspirants in our party for their understanding and cooperation. They are all immensely qualified for this position but out of love, brotherhood and in the interest of our Party, they allowed that I represent the PDP in the election. 

“Indeed, in this race, there’s no victor, no vanquished. We are all winners. I appreciate their understanding and magnanimity, and won’t take it for granted. I’ll be counting on their support as we prepare for the election which I strongly believe our party will win,” he said.
