UNILORIN Senate elects Odunola-Bakare, Etudaiye as DVCs

The Senate of the University of Ilorin has elected Prof. Taibat Odunola-Bakare of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Prof. Mukhtar Adeiza Etudaiye of the Faculty of Law as Deputy Vice-Chancellors.

The duo will succeed Prof. Olubunmi Abayomi Omotesho and Prof. Sulaiman Folorunsho Ambali, whose tenures as Deputy Vice-Chancellors expired on December 20, 2024.

The University’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun said in a press release yesterday that “the two new Deputy Vice Chancellors would formally assume office once the University Governing Council, led by Surv. Abiodun Aluko, approves the decision of the Senate.”

A renowned Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Odunola-Bakare is currently the Director of the Centre for Management and Leadership (CML). She is also the immediate past Dean of the Postgraduate School, University of Ilorin. She will serve as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) subject to the approval of the University Governing Council.

Prof. Etudaiye, on his part, is a Professor of Law and the current Chairman of the University Admissions Committee. He will serve as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology, and Innovation) subject to the approval of the University Governing Council.

The current Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology, and Innovation), Prof. Adegboyega Adisa Fawole, will now serve as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services).

Mr Akogun said, “In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, commended the outgoing Deputy Vice Chancellors on their dedication and loyalty to the system”.

UNILORIN Senate approves appointment of Oloyede, Obafemi, Akanji as Emeritus Professors

The Senate of the University of Ilorin has approved the appointment of three of the University’s retired dons as Emeritus Professors.

A statemeht by the University’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, disclosed that the University’s highest decion-making body, at its 304th meeting on Thursday, gave its nod for Prof. Is’haq Olanrewaju Oloyede, Prof. Olu Obafemi, and Prof. Musbau Akanji to be addressed henceforth as ‘Emeritus Professors’.

Emeritus Professor Oloyede, who retired from the services of the University in October last year, is a former Vice Chancellor of the University and the current Registrar and Chief Executive of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation (JAMB).

Emeritus Professor Obafemi, a renowned scholar of English and Dramatic Literature, also retired from the services of the University in 2020.

Emeritus Professor Akanji, a former two-time Vice Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, and Federal University of Technology, Minna, is a renowned scholar of Biochemistry. He retired in 2021.

University of Ilorin celebrates 50 years of excellence and impact

The University of Ilorin, one of Nigeria’s leading academic institutions, is set to mark its golden jubilee with a year-long celebration of excellence, innovation, and community impact.

At a historic unveiling of the 50th Anniversary logo at the university’s permanent site in Ilorin, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wahab Egbewole SAN, emphasized the institution’s unwavering commitment to societal development and global relevance.

Highlighting the university’s dedication to fostering strong ties with society, Professor Egbewole noted that students and faculty are deeply engaged in transformative initiatives.

Through the Community Development Experience (COBES) programmme, various departments and faculties have positively impacted communities across Kwara State, particularly in rural towns and villages.

The Vice-Chancellor proudly announced that 10,789 students have benefitted from the Federal Government’s student loan initiative, with even more expected in the coming academic session. This reflects the university’s goal of empowering its students to become not just job seekers but creators of opportunities.

As part of its 2024–2028 strategic plan, the university aims to elevate its status to a world-class institution. According to Professor Egbewole, the roadmap focuses on advancing cutting-edge research, enhancing infrastructure, and strengthening community engagement.

Key projects, such as the establishment of an innovation hub, are already in place to drive student initiatives and foster a culture of creativity and entrepreneurship.

“Our strategic plan is not just a document, it’s a commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible. We are dedicated to improving the lives of our students, staff, and the communities we serve,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

The Chairman of the 50th Anniversary Ceremonial Committee, Professor Olugbenga Mokuolu, described the anniversary logo as a symbol of the university’s aspirations and vision for the future.

He revealed that projects worth ₦50 billion will be inaugurated during the celebrations, showcasing the remarkable progress and achievements of the institution over the past 50 years.

The golden jubilee celebration, which promises to be both reflective and forward-looking, will include a week-long program of activities aimed at celebrating the university’s legacy while charting a bold course for its future. Professor Mokuolu remarked, “This anniversary is a celebration of excellence, a tribute to our past, and an inspiration for what lies ahead. It is also an opportunity to reconnect with our alumni and give them a sense of belonging.”

The Vice-Chancellor called on alumni and stakeholders to actively support the university’s development initiatives. “As we celebrate our golden jubilee, we look forward to our alumni stepping up to contribute to the growth and transformation of their alma mater,” he said.

UNILORIN Faculty hosts public lecture on economic policies, their impact on businesses, households

The Faculty of Management Sciences, University of Ilorin, held its second annual public lecture of on Wednesday, focusing on the theme “Government Economic Policies: Prospects, Challenges, and the Way Forward for Businesses and Households.”

The event, hosted at the institution’s auditorium, brought together scholars, policymakers, business leaders, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders to explore the impact of government economic policies on businesses and households. It also examined the challenges hindering Nigeria’s economic growth and proposed actionable solutions.

Keynote addresses were delivered by Dr. Kamoru Yusuf, CEO of Kamwire Industries, and Mr. Segun Maleghemi, Chief Innovation Officer at Quaranaos Technology Ltd.

Dr. Yusuf’s paper, presented by Mr. Abdulfattah A. Adeyemi, General Manager of Corporate Services at Kamwire Industries, centered on “Trade Policies and Global Competitiveness.” He emphasized the role of international trade agreements, tariffs, and other policy instruments in shaping domestic businesses and consumer choices.

While trade liberalization can spur economic growth, encourage exports, and create jobs, Dr. Yusuf highlighted challenges such as trade deficits, increased competition for local industries, and job displacement. He called for a balanced approach, advocating gradual tariff reductions and stronger regional trade agreements like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to enhance Nigeria’s economic integration and competitiveness.

Dr. Yusuf expanded on this, providing a detailed analysis of tariff policy instruments such as customs duties, import quotas, anti-dumping duties, and safeguard measures. He noted that trade policies are essential for achieving economic growth, job creation, industrial development, and environmental protection.

Delving into various trade theories, Dr. Yusuf explained how free trade, protectionism, mercantilism, and comparative advantage have influenced global economic strategies. He urged Nigeria to focus on industries where it has a competitive edge while balancing open trade policies with protective measures to shield domestic industries.

He also highlighted the dual impacts of trade liberalization: while it boosts exports, foreign investment, and job creation, it can also lead to trade deficits, job displacement, and environmental challenges.

Addressing Nigeria’s economic struggles, exacerbated by structural inefficiencies and the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Yusuf called for strategic and innovative trade policies to combat high inflation, currency depreciation, and the growing debt burden.

The guest speaker, Mr. Segun Maleghemi, who discussed “Digital Economic Policies: Innovation, Privacy, and Cybersecurity.” His presentation examined the government’s approach to technology adoption, data protection, and cybersecurity in the digital age.

Mr. Maleghemi stressed the importance of fostering innovation while safeguarding consumer privacy and national security. He highlighted frameworks such as the National Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) and the Cybersecurity Act, pointing out gaps in enforcement and the need for policies that balance innovation with effective regulation.

He cautioned against overly punitive measures that stifle technological advancement and emphasized the importance of stakeholder collaboration to create innovation-friendly policies.

Mr. Maleghemi recommended clearer enforcement mechanisms, improved cybersecurity measures, and consistent dialogue between the government, businesses, and consumers to address regulatory challenges.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Prof. R.A. Gbadeyan, Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences, described the lecture as a bridge between academic research and real-world challenges. He urged participants to embrace actionable insights to advance society.

Prof. Abubakar S. Kasum, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, highlighted the urgency of addressing Nigeria’s structural bottlenecks, high lending rates, and policy inconsistencies. He called for reforms in agricultural productivity, infrastructure development, and financial inclusion to foster economic growth.

Participants at the event stressed the need for policy consistency, diversification of the economy, and strategic public-private partnerships. They emphasized improving infrastructure and strengthening regional trade collaborations to promote sustainable growth.

The lecture series continues to serve as a vital platform for critical discussions on Nigeria’s economic trajectory, offering insights into sustainable growth strategies for businesses and households.

UNILORIN VC salutes Nigerian Tribune’s 75 years of impact on national development

As the Nigerian Tribune newspaper marked the 75th anniversary of its establishment, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has saluted the glowing contributions of the frontline newspaper to national and human development.

In a statement issued by the University Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, the Vice Chancellor said that the newspaper has been a blessing to Nigeria and humanity since it first hit the streets on November 16, 1949.

Prof. Egbewole paid glowing tributes to the founder of the newspaper, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and those who supported his progressive vision, which culminated in the conception of such a resilient, exciting and enduring media outfit.

He also commended the past and present generations of staff of the newspaper and its sister publications for sustaining the tradition of hard work and professionalism despite several challenges.

Prof. Egbewole, who is also the Secretary-General of the Association of West African Universities (AWAU), said that the newspaper has not only contributed to the socio- political development of Nigeria but has also impacted positively on its economic development.

The renowned Professor of Jurisprudence and International Law praised the newspaper for being an oven of outstanding leaders in politics, journalism, and business, saying that its contributions would continue to remain exciting to chroniclers of Nigeria’s contemporary history.

Prof. Egbewole described the newspaper, which is the oldest surviving privately-owned newspaper outfit in Nigeria, as a great friend of the University.

The Vice Chancellor specifically thanked the newspaper for the support its support for the University since its establishment in 1975, saying that the University has benefited from its quality reportage of its activities.

He added that the newspaper has not only assisted in providing training grounds for many of its undergraduates in relevant disciplines who did one industrial attachment programme or the other at the newspaper house but it has also provided employment opportunities for many of its graduates.

While thanking the newspaper for its previous support, the Vice Chancellor expressed the hope that the Nigerian Tribune would continue to support the University in its efforts to becoming the nation’s best, one of the best ten in Africa and among the leading 500 universities in the world.

Egbewole celebrates Emir of Ilorin on 29th anniversary of his reign

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has congratulated the Emir of Ilorin and Chairman, Kwara State Council of Chiefs, Alhaji (Dr) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, CFR, on his 29th anniversary on the throne of his forebears.

In a statement issued by the University Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, Prof. Egbewole said that the reign of the Emir has not only been eventful but also very peaceful and progressive.

The Vice Chancellor, who is also the Secretary-General of the Association of West African Universities (AWAU), described the Emir as a great leader who deserves to be celebrated for his exemplary contributions to nation-building before and since his appointment in 1995.

Prof. Egbewole said that the Emir has been a father of all and a great supporter of the nation’s most sought-after University.

The Vice Chancellor, who pointed out that the University and particularly his Administration, has been enjoying a good relationship with he Emir, called for more collaborations between the University and its host community.

Prof. Egbewole wished the monarch many more years of quality services to his people, the nation, and humanity at large.

Prof Afolayan advocates for urgent mental health reforms in Nigeria

Professor Joel Adeleke Afolayan from the Department of Nursing Science at the University of Ilorin has called for urgent reforms to address society’s widespread neglect of mental health.

Delivering the university’s 267th inaugural lecture titled, “Mind Over Matter in the Removal of the Thick Veil of Negligence,” Professor Afolayan emphasized how societal indifference to mental health stifles personal potential and societal progress.

In his lecture, the Professor Nursing urged for a shift in both cultural and policy perspectives on mental health. He argued that negligence of both personal and institutional prevents recognition of mental health’s vital role in individual lives and collective resilience.

“Negligence robs us of our potential, stifles growth, and hinders progress,” he stated, suggesting that addressing this indifference could unlock new pathways for societal development.

Central to his message was the concept of “Mind over Matter,” higlighting the resilience of the human mind in overcoming adversity.

Drawing on ideas from Buddhism, Hinduism, and Stoicism, Professor Afolayan advocated for cultivating mindfulness, self-awareness, and positive thinking to improve mental well-being. Although some may dismiss this as lacking scientific basis, he noted its metaphorical power in inspiring people to harness mental strength to face challenges.

Among his recommendations, Professor Afolayan called for policy changes that prioritize mental health, increased funding for mental health services, and greater access to care.

He also emphasized the importance of inclusive community practices, urging society to promote diversity, challenge stereotypes, and build stronger social connections.

In particular, he advocated for the full implementation of Nigeria’s National Mental Health Act of 2023, which he hailed as a milestone in advancing mental health services in the country.

Highlighting the critical role of nursing in mental health care, Professor Afolayan pointed to studies linking mental health issues, such as anxiety, to poor academic performance.

He stressed the need for a supportive culture within educational and healthcare institutions, warning that without proper support, nurses face high risks of burnout and compassion fatigue.

Professor Afolayan, however, urged individuals, communities, and policymakers to work collectively to remove the barriers of negligence surrounding mental health.

He envisioned a more compassionate and resilient society where mental health is recognized as a top priority, emphasizing that education and awareness are key to dispelling stigmas associated with mental illness.

Fagbemi urges prioritization of education in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy

Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef O. Fagbemi, SAN, on Friday emphasized the importance of education in nurturing democratic values and building a stronger future for Nigeria.

Delivering the convocation lecture titled “Nurturing Democratic Values and Education for the Future of Nigeria,” at the 39th Convocation of the University of Ilorin, Fagbemi highlighted the role of education as a key pillar in advancing democracy, fostering social cohesion, and promoting national unity.

In his address, Fagbemi commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for its commitment to education, notably through initiatives like the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

He stated that NELFUND has already begun to impact the education sector positively by granting over 351,000 loans worth N84.2 billion as of September 2024. The scheme, according to him, is a testament to the government’s efforts to make education accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic background.

Fagbemi stressed that education plays a crucial role in nation-building, stating that “a well-educated citizenry fosters stability, social cohesion, and progress.”

He encouraged graduates to reflect on how they can contribute to the development of their communities and the country at large, urging them to adopt the mindset of service to the nation rather than focusing solely on personal gains.

He cited former U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s famous words: “Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.”

Fagbemi also expressed the role of education in upholding human rights, stating that all educated individuals share the responsibility to advocate for justice and equality.

He argued that education equips citizens with the tools needed to actively engage in democratic processes, ensuring that leaders are held accountable.

The Attorney General further called for reforms in Nigeria’s educational system, advocating for improved infrastructure, teacher training, and inclusive policies that address the needs of marginalized populations, such as girls, children from low-income families, and people with disabilities.

He emphasized that achieving gender equality in education is crucial for the country’s democratic growth, highlighting the need to break down barriers that hinder girls’ access to education.

Fagbemi decried the challenges facing Nigeria’s education system, including political interference, corruption, and inequality in access to education, particularly in economically disadvantaged regions.

He urged the government to create policies that foster inclusivity and democratic values within the education system, stressing that “education is not just about individual success; it’s about building a prosperous and democratic society.”

The lecture, however, called for Nigeria to emulate countries like South Africa and Singapore by integrating civic education into the curriculum, promoting critical thinking, and empowering teachers to adapt their teaching strategies to the needs of their students.

Fagbemi emphasized that a reformed education system, which ties economic progress to democratic governance, is essential for Nigeria’s long-term success.

Unilorin graduates 12,042 students at 39th Convocation, celebrates milestones in digital transformation, research

The University of Ilorin will graduate a total of 12,042 students during its 39th Convocation Ceremonies, according to the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Wahab Egbewole, SAN.

The Vice Chancellor made this announcement today during a press briefing at the University Auditorium, where he also celebrated the institution’s achievements in research, digital transformation, and infrastructural development.

For the 2022/2023 academic session, the breakdown of graduates in the First Degree/Diploma category includes 256 First Class, 3,842 Second Class (Upper Division), 6,178 Second Class (Lower Division), 1,299 Third Class, and 62 with a Pass. Additionally, 124 MBBS, 64 Nursing, 35 Optometry, and 30 Veterinary Medicine graduates are part of the convocation, alongside Pharmacy students, with 18 graduating with Distinction and 85 with a Pass.

The convocation will also see 1,875 students awarded Higher Degrees, including 92 Postgraduate Diplomas, 1,280 Master’s, 179 Professional Master’s, and 323 PhDs.

“This is a momentous occasion not only for our graduates but for the entire university community,” said Prof. Egbewole. “We have continued to raise our academic standards and have made substantial progress in various aspects of university administration, particularly in digital transformation and research.”

Professor Egbewole also highlighted the institution’s ongoing digital transformation efforts aimed at improving service delivery. Key achievements include the migration of the University’s data to the secure Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform and the launch of an integrated enterprise portal to enhance communication across departments.

Several processes, such as the admissions ranking system, academic staff promotions, student union elections, and transcript ordering, have been automated to improve efficiency and transparency.

The University has further enhanced its Learning Management System (LMS) and provided alternative power backups at network distribution points to ensure uninterrupted digital services. Additionally, dedicated internet services have been deployed at key locations to support academic research and collaboration.

According to the VC, the University of Ilorin is also making strides in research and international collaborations. The Senate Research Grant (SRG) was revived with a ₦200 million annual budget, and a Special Intervention fund of ₦50 million was introduced to support groundbreaking research. The institution, which boasts around 20 patents, was recently recognized as the Nigerian university with the most patents by the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology.

“The University of Ilorin is now recognized as one of Nigeria’s leading institutions in terms of patents, reflecting our commitment to innovation and research,” added Prof. Egbewole.

Prof. Egbewole added that the university’s international collaborations have expanded significantly, with faculty members and students engaging in exchange programs with institutions across the globe. This year, students and staff participated in research and training in countries such as the United States, Spain, and Lithuania, further strengthening the university’s global academic network.

The University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, in collaboration with international institutions, is conducting a major research project on antimicrobial resistance, funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) with a grant of $1.6 million, Prof Egbewole said.

Several infrastructure projects will be commissioned during the convocation, including the Faculty of Law Library, Professorial Suite, and Moot Court, as well as the new Home Economics and Food Science Building. The University will also unveil solar street lighting systems and a new private hostel at the College of Health Sciences.

The 39th Convocation Ceremonies commenced on October 11, 2024, with a Jumat Service, followed by an interdenominational church service on October 13, 2024.

The Convocation Lecture, titled Nurturing Democratic Values and Education for the Future of Nigeria, will be delivered on October 18, 2024, by Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, SAN, Nigeria’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice. A series of other events, including the Chancellor’s cocktail and command performances, will also take place.

JAMB registrar cautions Africa against reliance on foreign AI technologies

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, on Wednesday in Ilorin tasked African nations to guard against reliance on foreign developed Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies.

Oloyede stated this while delivering the University of Ilorin Lecture Series entitled: “Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humanities”.

The registrar who was a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin also cautioned those in the academics who lack adequate knowledge about their subjects, against adopting AI in the quest to seek solution about their subjects so as not to be mislead.

Oloyede allayed the fears that AI will replace humanity, while pointing out that the technology has come to stay.

He however maintained that humanity should be in control of AI “if we will save humanities from perdition.

“African nations need to invest in building their own AI capabilities, so they are not entirely dependent on external powers. By being part of AI’s global development, they can ensure that they are not exploited or left out of future.

“African Telecommunication Unions ATU African Union (AU) Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS, and Smart Africa must lead in the charge in developing AI strategies tailored to be the continent’s specific needs,” he said.

Oloyede observed that these bodies should promote policies that encourage the ethical development and use of AI across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, and governance.

He advocated for a collaboration between African countries on AI research and data sharing can help mitigate the risk of relying on foreign developed AI technologies.

Oloyede, also a professor of Islamic studies tasked scholars in the discipline to take up the challenge of generating content for AI to ensure that it contents conforms with fundamental human rights, values, and Islamic doctrines and principles.

“In fields like Islamic studies and Law, AI must be developed with sensitivity to ethical and cultural contexts.

“Universities and scholars should explore how AI can assist in complex tasks like issuing fatwas or navigating legal ethics, while ensuring that AI aligns with fundamental human rights values”, he said.

He advocated the adoption of Hausa sign language as second national official language in Nigeria.
