The Bishop Smith Memorial College, Ilorin Class of 1980 Old Students Association has donated a projector machine and renovated dilapidated classrooms to enhance learning in the school.
The donation is part of the activities marking the 45th Graduation Anniversary of the association themed: From the Past Loyalty to Present Honour: Revisiting the Memory of 1980 Set”.
Speaking to newsmen on the sidelines of the Anniversary in Ilorin, Mrs Toyin Alokolaro, the National President of the Association explained that some of the donations also includes photocopier machine and computers.
Alokolaro stated that the anniversary is a way for association to stay connected with their alma mater and with each other.
According to her, the association is actively supporting their former school in providing resources for current students.
She recalled that in the past, the school fees was only N30 and they were able to acquire their uniforms, cardigans, school books and other necessary items.
The president of the association however observed that things have greatly changed and it becomes necessary for them to intervene and provide the necessary assistance for their school.
Also speaking, the pioneer President of the association, Rev. Peter Ibikunle, said the association was established in 1993 out of desire to keep the bond of the Old students living in Lagos State.
According to him, by 2013 the association was nationalise to bring on board other members across the country and in diaspora.
Ibikunle pointed out that laudable intervention had been rendered to their alma mater through provision of amenities such air conditioner, photocopier machine and projector among others.
In his appreciative remark, the Principal of Bishop Smith Secondary School, Mr Rufus Agunbiade, commended the association for their generosity and commitment in giving back to their school.
“The computers, air conditioners, photocopier, projectors and renovations of the school have significantly enhanced our learning environment.
“These tremendous gifts are a testament to your dedication to the future generations of the students.
“However, your contributions extends beyond the physical infrastructure, you’ve demonstrated the value of community mutual support and social responsibility,” he said.
Agunbiade also appealed to the government to ensure that public schools remains relevant, adding that the children are embodiment of talents as some of the students scored about 300 in the JAMB examinations.
