Community seeks justice over mysterious death of member in Police custody

The Erubu-Asunnara Community in Balogun Fulani Ward I of Ilorin South LGA, Kwara State, is reeling from the tragic loss of one of its members, Jimoh Tunji AbdulQodir.

The community is demanding justice following the mysterious death of Mr. AbdulQodir while in police custody at the Nigeria Police Headquarters in Kwara.

Mr. Jimoh Tunji AbdulQodir, a well-loved and hardworking individual, was reported to have been involved in a dispute over a debt of ₦220,000 with one Mr. Peter, a colleague at a poultry farm where he worked.

The situation escalated when Mr. AbdulQodir received a distressing call that led to his arrest by the police on Friday, December 20, 2024.

According to community members, Mr. AbdulQodir was initially denied access to his family and the reasons for his detention seemed unclear.

The family’s attempts to meet with him were unsuccessful until they were finally informed to come and bail him out, only to be devastated by news of his sudden demise.

The family’s visit to the mortuary confirmed the heartbreaking reality of Mr. AbdulQodir’s passing, sparking outrage and disbelief among community members.

Questions arose about the circumstances of his death, as it was claimed by authorities that he had taken his own life by hanging in the police cell.

However, upon inspection, discrepancies were noted, casting doubt on the official narrative.

In response to the community’s outcry, the Kwara State Police Command has assured that investigations are underway to uncover the truth behind the tragic incident.

The Public Relations Officer for the command, DSP Adetoun stated that no stone would be left unturned in seeking justice for Mr. AbdulQodir and his grieving family.

Calls for justice have reverberated beyond the Erubu-Asunnara Community, with appeals made to various authorities, including the Kwara State Governor, the Inspector General of Police, the Nigeria Bar Association, Human Rights Groups, and Civil Society Organizations.

The community is united in their demand for accountability and the prosecution of those responsible for the untimely death of Mr. Jimoh Tunji AbdulQodir.
