Coup: Tinubu holds consultations with bordering state Governors on Niger situation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu convened a meeting on Sunday with governors from states neighboring Niger Republic to discuss the ongoing situation in the country.

The session took place at the State House in Abuja and marked a step in President Tinubu’s efforts to address the issues unfolding in Niger.

Notable attendees included governors Ahmed Aliyu (Sokoto), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Mai Malam Buni (Yobe), Idris Nasir (Kebbi), and Dr. Dikko Radda (Katsina).

In his capacity as the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President Tinubu had previously issued a seven-day ultimatum to the military junta in Niger Republic, urging them to restore power to Mohammed Bazoum.

In addition to the ultimatum, President Tinubu announced several sanctions during a previous meeting held in Abuja the prior weekend.

These measures have resulted in the closure of borders connecting to Niger, as well as the suspension of power and flight operations indefinitely.

President Tinubu had initially sought approval from the National Assembly to deploy military personnel to the troubled Niger region. However, he received counsel to exercise caution given the current circumstances.
