In a vibrant display of commitment to enhancing journalism standards, the Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) recently hosted a transformative one-day capacity-building training for its members in Ilorin, Kwara State. The event, designed to elevate the skills of online media professionals, featured insightful sessions led by distinguished speakers Dr. Abdulrasheed Saadudeen and Taofiq Olateju Esq.
The training commenced with an opening remark by ASKOMP’s Secretary, Prince Oyewale Oyelola, who highlighted the association’s dedication to the continuous professional development of its members. He emphasized the importance of staying current with the rapidly evolving digital media landscape to maintain high standards in journalism.
“Our commitment is to ensure that every member is up-to-date with the latest practices in digital media,” Prince Oyelola affirmed. “This training is a testament to our resolve in supporting the growth and development of our members.”
Dr. Abdulrasheed Saadudeen, a former Head of the Department of Mass Communication at Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, captivated participants with his discourse on the important role of journalists in society. Highlighting their function as agenda-setters and opinion moulders, Dr. Saadudeen stressed the need for journalists to possess a strong command of the English language and to build robust networks.
“Journalists are crucial in informing the public about societal events,” Dr. Saadudeen remarked. “They serve as agenda-setters and opinion moulders. Effective journalism requires mastery of language and the ability to cultivate relationships with information sources.
The second session, led by Taofiq Olateju Esq., focused on the Strategic Law Against Public Participation (SLAPP). He advised journalists on legal recourse in cases of slander or libel, advocating for the use of civil or high courts rather than involving police or security agencies.
“Section 39(1) of the 1999 Constitution guarantees freedom of expression,” Olateju stated. “No law should criminalize this freedom. Journalists should be protected while performing their duties. If defamed, individuals can seek redress through appropriate legal channels.”
The Kwara State Police PRO, Princess Adetoun Ejire, lauded ASKOMP members for their dedication to unbiased reporting, highlighting their essential role in keeping the public informed.
“I commend every member of this association for your fair reportage,” she said. “Your contributions to a peaceful state are invaluable. The leadership has done an excellent job in organizing this training, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning.
In his speech, ASKOMP Chairman, Salihu Shola Taofeek expressed gratitude for the support from Kwara stakeholders, which has significantly facilitated the work of online journalists. He announced Taofiq Olateju Esq. as the official legal adviser of the association.
“This training highlights our commitment to improving our skills to meet the demands of the digital media industry,” Taofeek said. “We appreciate the support of all stakeholders and look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts.
The event concluded with closing remarks from ASKOMP Vice Chairman, Aiyelabegan Babatunde AbdulRasaq, who thank everyone for their contributions towards the success of the programme. He urged members to apply the lessons learned from the training to enhance their journalistic practices.
The high turnout and engagement from participants reflect the association’s dedication to fostering a professional and dynamic media environment in Kwara State.
