The Kwara State chapter of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has held a special leadership training programme for newly elected officers in the state.
The programme, which took place on Sunday at the FOMWAN Multipurpose Hall in Ilorin, was aimed at equipping the new executives with the knowledge and skills required for effective leadership.
Speaking at the event, the State Amirah, Hajia Biliqis Modupe Oladimeji, described the gathering as “another history and commitment” to the sacred trust (Amanah) of leadership.
She congratulated the new executives, who were screened and approved by the Shura Council led by the pioneer State Amirah and Board of Trustees Chairperson, Alhaja Raliat O. Sanni, during the association’s 40th anniversary conference hosted by Offa Local Government.
Hajia Oladimeji reminded participants that FOMWAN, established over 40 years ago, is a voluntary umbrella body of Muslim women’s associations across Nigeria and beyond.
“Its vision is to empower Muslim women to become role models who make positive societal impact through Da’wah, establishment of educational institutions, capacity building, qualitative education, health services, humanitarian aid, micro-enterprise schemes, and advocacy for women, youths, and children,” she said.
She highlighted the association’s strong national presence, with branches in all 36 states, quarterly National Executive Council meetings, and rotational annual conferences.

Quoting Islamic principles, Hajia Oladimeji stressed that leadership in Islam is rooted in trust, justice, equity, and selfless service.
“Leadership is about trust from the followers and commitment by the leader to uphold and not betray that trust,” she said.
She urged the new executives to lead by example as shepherds who would be accountable to Allah for how they pilot the affairs entrusted to them.
The State Amirah also called on the executives to draw up work plans aligned with FOMWAN’s thematic areas, submit quarterly reports, work closely with past leaders for continuity, and strictly observe the two-year tenure policy, renewable only once upon satisfactory performance supported by written stewardship reports.
She appealed to local governments yet to conduct their elections to do so promptly, noting that “change of baton should always be done without delay or extension.”

In a passionate appeal to government at all levels, Hajia Oladimeji urged the Federal, State, and Local Governments to intensify efforts towards securing the release of all persons in captivity due to insecurity and to re-strategise against perpetrators of such acts.
She disclosed that the FOMWAN national leadership has directed all state branches to organise monthly recitation of the complete Qur’an, seeking Allah’s mercy, peace, and tranquillity for the nation, particularly Kwara State.
Speaking on the constitution and responsibilities of officers, the immediate past Amirah, Hajia Nimatallahi Labaika, explained that all officials must have a copy of the association’s constitution to guide them in the administration of its affairs.
She stressed that all officers must operate strictly in accordance with the constitutional guidelines.
The former Amirah emphasised the importance of compliance with FOMWAN’s foundational principles and strategic plans, which are designed to ensure unity and progress within the association.
“FOMWAN is focused on transitioning to new leadership across its chapters, encouraging leaders to build on the foundations laid by their predecessors and work toward achieving the organisation’s vision of promoting education, health, and economic empowerment of Muslim women,” she said.
Also speaking, Dr Mutiat Olusesi, in her lecture titled Leadership and Followership in Islam, explained that Islam emphasises mutual respect and trust between leaders and followers.

She stated that leaders must respect the rights of their followers and work towards their welfare.
“Leaders must ensure justice, fairness, and the welfare of their people, while followers must be obedient, loyal, and supportive,” she said.
Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Dr Bashir Omipidan, noted that people in positions of authority must uphold integrity and faithfulness.
He urged leaders to build inner strength to tackle future challenges and demonstrate greater love and humility toward their members.
Dr Omipidan also advised members to prioritise unity, transparency, accountability, honesty, respect for hierarchy, and to avoid actions capable of causing crisis or division within the organisation.
He further stressed the need for leaders to remain consistent in character, noting that true leadership is tested during challenging times. According to him, leaders must be resilient, prayerful, and committed to upholding the values of the organisation at all times.
Dr Omipidan added that effective communication between leaders and members remains crucial for organisational growth, urging executives to listen actively, engage inclusively, and promote a culture of mutual respect within the association.
In her goodwill message on agenda setting, a member of the FOMWAN Board of Trustees, Alhaja Raliat Oyenike Sanni, urged members to prioritise education and remain diligent in their duties.
She emphasised that setting clear and achievable goals is essential for organisational success, noting that leaders must focus on impactful programmes that address the needs of women, youths, and the broader society.
Alhaja Sanni further advised the new executives to embrace teamwork and strategic planning, adding that continuity in vision and dedication to service would strengthen the association’s legacy and relevance.
Also, the Auditor, Alhaja Silifat Ishola, spoke on financial management and record-keeping, emphasising accountability and proper documentation in the running of the association.
She noted that transparency in financial dealings builds trust among members and enhances the credibility of the organisation.
Alhaja Ishola further urged officers to maintain accurate records, adhere strictly to financial guidelines, and ensure prudent management of resources to sustain the association’s programmes and activities.
Highlights of the programme included a reflective memory lane session where past achievements and milestones of the association were revisited, inspiring participants on the journey so far.
The event also featured advisory sessions from senior members, as well as group photographs that brought together participants, including youths and members from across the state, fostering unity and a shared sense of purpose within the organisation.
