Alhaji Waziri Yakubu Gobir has emerged the governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in Kwara State ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Gobir, who was the only aspirant in the party emerged through an affirmation by the party delegates at its state secretariat in the GRA in Ilorin, Kwara state capital.
In his acceptance speech, Gobir recalled what he described as bitter experience of the primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state in 2018.
He said “today is indeed a milestone for us in YPP, it’s indeed a milestone for me personally in my political journey, a lot of you that we all started this journey together in 2018, know how few we were, you could also remember the bitter experience of the primaries we had in 2018, under the APC.
“We also remember how we put ourselves up and forged ahead and supported the party, APC, how we donated the premises that we are in today, as the headquarters of APC in Kwara, and how we went from this building to winning all the elective positions, including Presidential in 2019.
“As a person, I never stepped into the Kwara state government house for anything since that victory that I along with you people here actively participated. But, we picked ourselves up and since then, we determine to move from what was a forum into a movement and that movement today has become a party with structure across 193 wards and sixteen local government areas in the state with a confirmed 50,000 registered voters as our party members.”
Gobir, was popular for donating the highest number of campaign vehicles as a single person to the APC in the 2019 election.
Speaking while handing over the certificate of return to the candidate, after the affirmation, the party zonal chairman, North Central, Mohammed Mujtaba, who led other national officers to the congress, charged the party executives and members to continue to break new grounds in the state in the area of membership, assuring them of the support of National Executives.
In his remark, the state party chairman, Chief Dele Ogunbayo, congratulated the party officials and members for the successful convention, saying “Yakub Gobir, is a politician with uniqueness, very responsible, responsive, reliable, cool, calm with God-fearing personality.
“Praise be to God that the party is lucky to have gotten a golden fish that is loved by all and sundry and we unanimously agreed that he should be YPP gubernatorial flag-bearer and we strongly have faith in God, it is our belief that come 2023, Alhaji Waziri Yakub Gobir is the next Governor of Kwara State.
“We are working and moving towards the realization of this great agenda” he said
The event was witnessed by the representative of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Abdulkadir Sheu Ahmed and other party candidates at various levels.
