National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives University of Ilorin, (UITH) chapter has condemned last Tuesday’s assault on one of its members and a doctor by three bereaved relatives of a patient at the hospital.
The association warned that the union would no longer tolerate such violent attack on any of its member saying such barbaric act on any of its member and other health workers in the hospital “must stop”.
This was contained in a statement issued by NANIM Chairman, UITH Chapter, Kazeem Afolabi Ayinla Thursday.
Ayinla said while, the leadership of the association sympathises with the relatives of the deceased person, it was wrong for anyone to act in such manner.
He urged the management of the Hospital to strengthen it security network to forstall future occurence.
It was gathered that three family members of one Alhaji Salihu, a butcher who died at the hospital on Tuesday reportedly beat up a medical doctor and attacked a nurse on duty in the accident and emergency (A&E) wing of the UITH following what they described as nonchalant attitude of medical staff leading to the death of their relative.
During the attack, it was gathered that heavy equipment were reportedly thrown at a nurse on duty twice but for her alertness, she dogged it on the two occasions.
While the equipment reportedly got damaged, the nurse was said to had ran for her dear life.
Meanwhile, the leadership of NANNM UITH Chapter had extracted a written apology from the family of the deceased’s relative over the incident, while management of the UITH has reportedly held the corpse of the deceased insisting that the family must produce other culprits.
