Following the expiration of the tenure of the former Dean Student Affairs, University of Ilorin, Prof. Lanre Tajudeen Ajibade, Prof. M.T. Yakubu, has assumed duties, as the Dean of the Institution’s Student Affairs Unit.
Prof. Yakubu of the Department of Biochemistry assumed duties last Monday (March 28, 2022) along with the new Sub-Dean, Dr. D. Ojo of the Department of Geography and Environmental Management, as well as the new Deputy Registrar, Student Affairs Unit, Mrs. M.S. Zakariyyah of the Registry Unit.
Speaking with newsmen at the Dean’s office shortly after meeting with other stakeholders of the Unit, Prof. Yakubu appreciated the management of the University on his appointment as the new Dean. He, also, thanked the immediate past Dean, Prof. Ajibade and the Sub-Dean, Dr. Alex Akanmu, for the achievements recorded during their tenure.
Prof. Yakubu, who disclosed that he was very lucky to have among the hard working staff of the University to work with, also added that among his office mandates is to keep and maintain the University’s better by far status.
The new Dean, who was Sub-Dean, Students Affairs between 2010 and 2012, said that he understood little about the environment, adding, “With all these put together we are blessed with very good staff including the arrival of the new DR-Students’ Affairs, I am optimistic that by the special grace of God we shall add more positive impacts to what we met.”
The Dean, who added that he would work as a team with the Sub-Dean and others, said, “We shall work together, agreed together, talk together for the betterment of our Institution”.
In his message to the Student Union body, the new Dean urged them to see the new leadership of the Unit as theirs as he will also see and take them as his brothers, sisters, and children of one big family.
He said that he would also continue to assist them generally by preparing them ahead of the future challenges and as future leaders and not just campus leaders.
In his own submission, the new Sub-Dean, Dr. Ojo said that he embraced the opportunity given to him, but see it as a responsibility, a duty and assignments to be delivered as will be directed by the Dean.
Dr. Ojo, who has also played several roles that has to do with the Students since his undergraduate days till now, urged them to work together as a family and understand each other.
He promised to double his effort, adding that he would play more fatherly roles by putting the Students on the right way in accordance with the rules of the University.
While speaking, the new DR-Students, Mrs. Zakariyyah, who before her appointment had served as Faculty Officer of Education, University Admission Officer and at the establishment office of the University, expressed hope in working together to have a great team for the Student Affairs Unit.
She said, “I am excited with this team. My prayer and hope is that they work together with us to actually succeed and meet the vision and mission of the Unit.
In his remarks, the immediate past Dean, Prof. Ajibade, thanked Almighty God for standing by him throughout his tenure of about five years of two terms.
While congratulating the new Dean on his appointment, Prof Ajibade advised him to be more out spoken, and feel free to call on him in case he needs any information or assistance.
Prof. Ajibade also urged the new Dean to work together with the staff of the Unit for more success ahead and sustain the strategy of managing the students affairs.
“He should consult people, be conversant with the social media to know more of what is going on among the students and always relate with students fairly”, Prof. Ajibade added.
He advised the students to work together with the new Dean, Sub-Dean, and DR and obey the School rules and regulations so that they will not be in crises.
The immediate past Sub-Dean, Dr. Alex Akanmu gave all glory and adorations to God Almighty for his the opportunity given him to serve the University.
In his words of appreciation on behalf of his executive and the entire Unilorites, the out-going President of the Students Union, Comrade Taofik Waliullah(Omoluabi), appreciated the immediate past Dean, Prof. Ajibade and his Sub-Dean, Dr. Akanmu, for their advice, corrections on their mistake, listening to them, encouraging them, taking them as their sons and daughters, and also supporting them throughout.
He however prayed Almighty Allah to continue to be with them and lift them higher.
In their separate remarks, the Associations and tenants under the control of the Unit, led by their respective leaders congratulated and celebrated with the immediate past and the new leadership of the Unit, and promised to work together to bring more successes to the University.
The meeting was held in batches, included Student Affairs Unit staff, Executive members of the Private Hostels Association, led by Prince Segun Oyewole; Public Hostel Staff executive members, led by Alh. A. E. Sani; Motion Ground space/shop owners executive members; and Motor Park Association, comprising Keke, Korope, Car and Bus groups, among others.
Highlights of the meeting include formal handing over, visit to the Student Union newly completed luckup shops, and presentation of awards of honour to the immediate past Dean and the immediate past Sub-Dean, for their hard work and fatherly role by the leadership of the Student Union.
