The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has begun a major restructuring of its political machinery ahead of the 2027 general elections, dissolving all party caucuses across the state’s 16 Local Government Areas with immediate effect.
The move, which effectively clears the existing caucus structures at the grassroots level, followed resolutions reached by the party’s State Executive Committee (SEC) and other critical stakeholders during a closed-door meeting with the party leader and former President of the 8th Senate, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, during his recent homecoming and stakeholders’ engagements in Kwara.
The development signals a fresh phase in the PDP’s preparations for the 2027 elections, with the opposition party seeking to reposition its structures, widen participation and build what it described as a more effective and inclusive political machinery.
The party’s State Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, disclosed the decision in a statement on Sunday, saying the dissolution marked the beginning of a comprehensive reorganisation of the PDP in the state.
Adewara said the party had effectively commenced its journey towards 2027 and needed to “refresh its structures, bring in new hands, broaden participation” and strengthen its organisational capacity ahead of the elections.
According to him, the objective is to create a political structure capable of delivering victory for the PDP at all levels in the 2027 general elections.
The decision also highlights the authority of the State Executive Committee to take steps considered necessary to strengthen, reposition and reorganise the party in the overall interest of its members and electoral fortunes.
The PDP, however, sought to prevent the dissolution from creating divisions within its ranks, expressing appreciation to members of the outgoing caucuses for their service and contributions to the party.
“We sincerely appreciate all members of the outgoing caucuses for their dedication, sacrifices, loyalty and contributions to the growth and development of the PDP in Kwara State,” Adewara said.
The party urged members of the dissolved caucuses to continue contributing their experience to its collective efforts towards 2027, while wishing them well in their future political endeavours.
It also appealed to party members across the state to remain calm, united and committed as arrangements are made for the recruitment, constitution and inauguration of new caucuses.
The PDP said the mechanisms for establishing the new structures were already being put in place.
The restructuring comes at a critical period in Kwara’s political landscape, with political parties increasingly turning their attention to grassroots mobilisation and internal organisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
For the Kwara PDP, the dissolution of the 16 local government caucuses could therefore mark the beginning of a broader effort to rebuild its grassroots structures, accommodate new political actors and consolidate its preparations for the next electoral contest.
