The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kwara State Council on Wednesday suspended its planned nationwide protest scheduled to hold on tomorrow, Thursday 27 January over proposed petrol subsidy removal.
Briefing newsmen in Ilorin on the issue, the State Chairman of the Congress, Alhaji Aliyu Issa Ore said the Union only suspended the protest because the Federal Government has suspended its plan to increase price of petrol.
He noted that any time the Labour Union receive information that Government is about to jettison this part of wisdom, the Labour Movement will not hesitate to mobilize members of the public against the anti-peoples’ policy.
According to Ore, “on behalf of the State Executive Council of the Kwara NLC, I am glad to inform you that the Federal Government has put on hold her decision to increase pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, otherwise known as petrol due to information received on our resolve and readiness to troop out to protest against her unpopular policy.
“Sequel to this decision of the FG, the National Executive Council of NLC during her emergency meeting on Tuesday 25 January decided to suspend the planned protest till further notice”, he said.
However, the Congress Leadership in the state had expressed her profound gratitude to all stakeholders that helped in achieving the feat. “We did not take your cooperation for granted. We will continue to synergize with you on matters affecting our sectors and rise to the occasion whenever you call on us for assistance and support” he added.
It will be recalled that the labour movement in the state had mobilsed all Affiliated Union, Non-Governmental Organisations, Civil Society Organisations, Federation of Informer Sector Workers, Artisans Congress, Market Men and Women Association, Students’ Unions, Pensioners, People Living with Disability, Human Rights Activists and other Professional bodies for the suspended protest.
