The Management of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) has strongly condemned the physical assault on one of its medical doctors by a relative of a patient, reaffirming its commitment to protecting healthcare workers while ensuring quality care for patients.

In a press statement issued by the Head of Corporate Affairs, Fagbemi D. A., on behalf of the Management, the hospital described the incident as unfortunate and reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against any form of violence, whether verbal or physical, directed at healthcare personnel in the course of their duties.

According to the statement, the Management places the highest value on the lives, safety, and welfare of its staff, acknowledging their dedication and invaluable contributions to the growth of the institution.

It also stressed that the health, safety, and well-being of patients remain the hospital’s foremost priority.

The hospital noted that it has established peaceful, accessible, and effective channels through which patients and their relatives can lodge complaints or seek redress, rather than resorting to violence.

To further discourage attacks on healthcare workers, UITH said warning notices against assault have been strategically displayed across its facilities in English and several Nigerian languages to promote awareness and encourage responsible conduct.

The Management also disclosed that security personnel have been placed on heightened alert across the hospital to prevent a recurrence of such incidents and to safeguard staff, patients, and visitors.

UITH expressed its full support for the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in pursuing all lawful avenues following the assault. It added that the suspect had either been arraigned or was in the process of being arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction as of the time the statement was issued.

While condemning all forms of violence and uncivil behaviour, the hospital assured members of the public of its unwavering commitment to providing quality healthcare services in a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment.

The Management also welcomed patients and their relatives to its facilities, assuring them of continued dedication to delivering the highest standard of healthcare and attention to their medical needs.
