Midwifery: Kwara, UNFPA task student beneficiaries on commitment to studies

The Kwara Government in collaboration with the EU-SARAH Initiative, under the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on Wednesday in Ilorin tasked student beneficiaries to be committed in their studies in Nursing and Midwifery.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the first batch, comprising of about 100 students were inspected at the College of Nursing and Midwifery, Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH).

Speaking during the inspection visit, Dr. Mary Arinde, the Kwara Commissioner for Planning and Development commended the students who were lucky to benefit from the sponsored programme by European Union.

She pointed out that the skills they acquire from the programme of study would remain with them for life.

“I appeal that you concentrate on your study. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted,” she said.

Arinde warned that failure would not be tolerated, adding that they must justify the support and opportunity given to them free of charge.

Also speaking, the Sexual Reproductive Health Specialist, UNFPA, Mrs. Gloria Enueze explained that the programme sponsored under the European Union Strengthening Access to Reproductive and Adolescent Health program, is awarding free Community Midwifery study to 500 students, cutting across the 16 Local Government Area of Kwara.

She observed that this is an opportunity sought after by many people, while also enjoining the students to work hard and come out in flying colour.

In her address, the Reproductive Health Coordinator, Kwara state Ministry of Health Dr Kafayat Ibrahim said the students were lucky to qualify for the sponsorship.

She explained that the programme is tuition-free, while accomodations and monthly stipends are also catered for.

She advised the students to make judicious use of the opportunity given to them, by working hard and excelling in their studies.

Earlier in her welcoming address, the Provost of the College of Nursing , Dr Salamat Yusuf, enjoined the students to remain resolute and committed towards their study.

She commended UNFPA for the opportunity granted to students, and that the institution would continue to partner with organisation on future endeavors.
