2023: Tinubu calls for calm, peace over Lagos election results

All Progressives Congress Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has appealed to the people of Lagos State to be calm and eschew any act that can lead to breakdown of law and order.

Tinubu said the outcome of the election in Lagos where Labour Party won the presidential election should not be a source of provocation saying that the beauty of democracy is that people have a right to vote for the candidate of their choice.

The APC candidate further said that as a democrat he is bound to accept the outcome of any election whether favourable or not.

In a statement released Monday by the Presidential Campaign Council signed by Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed serious concern over reports of violence in parts of the state especially reported attacks on some traders of Igbo origin.

The former Lagos State Governor condemned any form of violence against people of any ethnic group in Lagos.

“The fact that the APC narrowly lost Lagos State to another party should not be the reason for violence. As a democrat, you win some, you lose some. We must allow the process to continue unhindered across the country while we maintain peace and decorum,” the statement said.

2023 polls: NUJ worries over attacks on Journalists

Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) leadership has expressed its concern that some Nigerian Security Personnel and Politicians have learned little about good conduct during elections, as attacks on voters and journalists during yesterday’s general election across the country still persist.

According to a media release signed up the National Secretary of the Union, Shuaibu Usman Leman, the Walin Shadalafiya, “specifically, the Union expresses serious concern by the conduct of Policemen in Port Harcourt who assaulted a journalist and political thugs in Ibadan, Oyo State who attacked voters, including Journalists”.

The union also noted that it was recorded by the NUJ Election Situation Room at the Union’s National Secretariat, Abuja that a reporter with The PUNCH, Gbenga Oloniniran, was on Saturday afternoon arrested by policemen near the residence of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State in Rumuiprikon, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

“He was brutalised by the policemen for attempting to take their pictures when they were assaulting a male voter at a polling unit close to Governor Wike’s polling unit at Wimpey Junction, Rumuepirikom, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

“In another sad incident, a vehicle belonging to the News Agency of Nigeria crew members on election duty around the Liberty area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital was among vehicles attacked by youths who were allegedly protesting bad governance in the country”, the release added.

Reacting while considering the preliminary report from the NUJ Election Situation Room in Abuja today, the NUJ President, Comrade Chris Isiguzo expressed worry that at this crucial time of transition, Policemen still vent their anger on Journalists while some politicians continue to devise dubious ways and means of trying to disrupt the political process.

According to Comrade Isiguzo, journalists take great personal and professional risks to collect, process and disseminate news and information to millions of citizens, yet some security operatives and some unscrupulous political Actors continue to plot evil against media professionals and their equipment.

The Union, he said will not accept this ugly trend where the number of journalists that suffer various acts of impunity across the country and attacks on media equipment and facilities increases during elections.

Attacks like these, Comrade Isiguzo noted pose great danger to democracy.

He therefore called on the Inspector General of Police and other Security Chiefs to come out with a better and sustainable strategy in securing Journalists while on election duties.

Stop heating up the polity with circulation of fake election results – Police, say wait for INEC’s Officials Pronouncements

The Nigeria Police has observed the spreading or circulation of alleged/fake elections results on social media and other news platforms, which is contrary to the policy and guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to a statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, mnipr, mipra “the Police has perceived this trend as a calculated attempt to heat up the polity and possibly create post elections chaos. We regard this as a disservice, unpatriotic, and a disinformation.

“The Nigeria Police hereby warns those who are spreading these alleged/fake election results to desist from such mischievous acts and wait patiently for INEC’s official results, which are authentic and tenable.

“The NPF urges Nigerians to remain calm, and go about their lawful engagements, while those who are billed to go to the polls today are requested to be orderly and law-abiding as we have re-enforced our security strategies for the smooth conclusion of the 2023 General Elections”, the statement said.

Agriculture is an important sector of Kwara State economy which could be well utilized to develop the entire state, the gubernatorial candidate of Africa Democratic Congress ( ADC ) in the state, Lawyer Issa Manzuma has observed.

Manzuma said since the state has much comparative advantage in agricultural production when compared to some states in Nigeria, his government will bring about sustainable agriculture revolution in the state, if elected governor in the forthcoming general elections.

The ADC governorship hopeful stated this during a press interview with Journalists, today in Ilorin, the state capital, promising that he will make the state food basket of the Nigeria.

He pointed out that having realized the great potential of the agriculture to economic development, his administration will ensure proper funding of the sector through provision of various incentive windows to farmers.

The ADC governorship candidate said he will ensure massive provision of improved seedlings , farming equipment, loan facility and other facilitation for farmers with the view to improve food production in the state.

He promised to encourage mechanized farming and engagement of youth in farming activities.

He said, his administration will address youth unemployment through the instrumentality of agriculture, while the shortage of food will be promptly arrested in the interest of the people.

He noted that the intentional strategic agriculture revolution will not only serve the state sufficiently, but will also generate revenue for the state through exportation of produce.

He appealed to the electorates to support his vision to make Kwara State food basket of the nation by voting massively for his party in the upcoming governorship election.

Akanbi 1 & 2 traditional leaders declare support for Olododo’s reelection …as lawmaker kick off campaign, commissions new projects

Earlier today, Social Democratic Party’s candidate for Ilorin East/South Federal Constituency, Hon. (Dr) Abdulganiyu Saka Cook-Olododo officially flagged off his campaign at Fufu, Akanbi ward 1 and headquarters of Ilorin South local government. He later proceeded to Magaji-Ajomu in Akanbi ward 2.

Hon. Olododo, before proceeding to venues of the carnival-like campaign rallies to address party faithfuls, supporter and community stakeholders, paid homage to traditional leaders in various communities in Akanbi wards 1 and 2, which includes the Alota of Ilota, Daudu and Baale of Fufu, Magaji Isokun-Olopon and that of Magaji-Ajomu.

The lawmaker also seized the opportunity to commission solar-powered boreholes he facilitated at Kawu (Akanbi 1) and Isokun-Olopon in Akanbi 2.

While canvassing for votes from people of the various communities, Olododo urged the people to compare the positive impacts of his representation in the rural areas to what those who have occupied same position in the past were able to do and they would realize that he has been able to break unprecedented records.

The traditional rulers in their various remarks attested to the unprecedented impacts of Olododo’s representation, from various empowerment programs, to facilitation of streetlights, solar powered boreholes, school renovation projects and most importantly, sponsorship of the Federal Medical Centre, Fufu establishment bill, which awaits presidential assent.

The Royal fathers also affirmatively declared support of their various communities for Hon. Olododo and the SDP, stressing that it is their belief that the emergence of the Party will engender sustainable development of the area, giving the precedence set by Olododo.

The Alota of Ilota in his remarks, said “We have felt impact of Olododo’s representation and we are going to repay him with our votes. Insha Allah, you will win. I also pray all the candidates of your party wins.”

2023: NEMA advises KWSG on proactive measures against electoral violence

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Thursday advised the Kwara State Government to take proactive measures against electoral crises in the State.

Mrs Zainab Saidu, the Head, Minna Operations Office of the Agency made the call in a statement made available to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

She stated that the Agency is advocating for proactive measures to be taken in order to prevent electoral crises in Kwara during the upcoming elections.

“The agency believes that by taking preventative steps, we can ensure a peaceful and orderly election process.

“NEMA is concerned about the potential for electoral violence and unrest, which can have devastating effects on the people of Kwara and the nation as a whole,” she said.

Saidu called on all political actors, community leaders, and citizens to exercise their rights and responsibilities peacefully, and to refrain from any form of violence or intimidation during the election period.

According to her, prevention is the best form of remedy in crises and disaster management.

She reiterated the resolve of the agency to continue with its responsibility of managing disaster in all its ramification.

She added that the agency will continue to sensitize the people of the need to remain peaceful particularly in the conduct of the 2023 general elections.

“In light of the above the agency strongly calls on politicians to ensure that their supporters operate within the ambit of the law.

“Politicians are also advised to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship and channel their grievances appropriately as provided for in the Nigeria Constitution,” she said.

Saidu also urged the electoral commission and other relevant authorities to take all necessary measures to prevent and manage electoral crises.

She advised on the need for deployment of security personnel, the establishment of early warning systems, and the provision of adequate training for election officials.

“We urge all Nigerians to support our efforts to promote peace and stability during this critical period.

“Together, we can ensure a peaceful and successful election process for Kwara State and for our nation as a whole,” she said. (NAN).

Impunity against Journalists: CJID holds symposium on elections 2023 security, media and safety

As part of its contributions to improve press freedom and the safety of Journalists during the 2023 general elections, the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) in partnership with The Canadian Fund for Local Initiative (CLFI) is organizing a Media Freedom Symposium for Nigerian Journalists.

The symposium which has its theme as ‘Elections 2023: Security, Media and Safety’ will hold on Tuesday 31st of January, 2023, in Lagos state, while many others are expected to participate via zoom.

According to the Centre, the symposium is to commemorate the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists and is a response to the continued threats to the safety of Journalists, and fears of what could emerge in the wake of the 2023 elections in the country.

“The event will bring a range of experts in media policy, media industry, judicial and legislative sectors, security personnel, frontline actors, and relevant international & local non-governmental organisations to reflect and proffer insights on how to protect journalists and media workers ahead of, during and post 2023 Nigeria elections.

“The question of safety is central to journalists’ performance of their duties without fear or interference, yet more and more democratic governments and elected officials resort to authoritarian tendencies, in the resolution of media-state conflicts.

“Additionally, election periods are typically notorious for attacks on journalists and for stifling the media ecosystem in the hope of constraining the spaces of democratic accountability, human freedom and citizen’s liberties. The 2023 elections are already showing promises to that effect.

“The symposium will also help push for an agenda for engaging security personnel and political parties regarding the protection of the Nigerian press. In this context, security agencies and political parties will hopefully join to draft and adhere to a pact to protect journalists, and the press, ahead of and during the elections.

“We believe that your experience and thoughts will contribute in no small measure to increasing knowledge in the subject matter and by that set a course towards improving Press Freedom and the safety of journalists in Nigeria”, the centre said.

Ending impunity for crimes against journalists is one of the most pressing issues to guarantee freedom of expression and access to information for all citizens.

The United Nations General Assembly had proclaimed 2 November of every year as the ‘International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists’ in General Assembly Resolution A/RES/68/163.

The Resolution urged Member States to implement definite measures countering the present culture of impunity.

This landmark resolution condemns all attacks and violence against journalists and media workers. It also urges Member States to do their utmost to prevent violence against journalists and media workers, to ensure accountability, bring to justice perpetrators of crimes against journalists and media workers, and ensure that victims have access to appropriate remedies.

It further calls upon States to promote a safe and enabling environment for journalists to perform their work independently and without undue interference.

FOMWAN, UN Women, Canada Grant strengthen capacity of Kwara women on 2023 General election

The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), with the support from UNWomen and Canada yesterday in Ilorin organized high level advocacy for Religious, community Leaders on the consequences of gender based violence and significance of electing credible Leaders in the forthcoming elections.

In her opening address, Hajia Rafiah Sanni, the National Amirah of FOMWAN stated that the subject matter of the programme was to sensitize women and other stakeholders on the coming general elections in Nigeria and discuss on proactive steps on Gender based violence.
She explained that Kwara is one of the three states identified for implementation of this project, adding that FOMWAN with the support of United Nations (UN) Women and Canada powered the mobilization and sensitization of women for the 2023 elections.

According to her, the programme is a high level advocacy forum with experts and different stakeholders expected to help foster good governance, gender and active participation of women in the electoral process.

Speaking on the theme: “Consequences of Gender-Based Violence and the Significance of Electing Credible Leaders”.

Sanni who was represented by Hajia Jemila Ariori, member, FOMWAN Elections and civic responsibilities committee said; that the project focused on Mobilization and Sensitization of Women in the 2023 General Elections, added that the overall goals of the project is to contribute to effective women’s participation in free, fair and violence free elections through interfaith actions.

She emphasised on the need to counter gender based violence during all elections especially as it affects women and girl child during and after elections.

The FOMWAN president reiterated on the importance of electing credible leaders by participating on the 2023 elections process so as to increase capacity of the community leaders and faith based women on curbing gender based violence.

Speaking also, Hajia Ni’mat Labaika, the Kwara State Amirah of FOMWAN pointed out that the organisation is an umbrella body of all Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria with branches across the thirty six states including FCT Abuja, and kwara branch

She explained that the faith based organisation has secured support from UN Women to implement a project on mobilization, sensitization and countering gender based violence before, during and after 2023 general elections.

“FOMWAN in the past decades has been actively involved in civic education and election observers across all the 36 states of the federation including FCT.

“Our ability to mobilize our members in the rural communities to actively participate in the electioneering process cannot be overemphasized,” she said.

Also speaking, the Resource person on Advocacy, Head of Centre Federal ministry of information and Culture, Hajia Bilqees Oladimeji, called for effective advocacy towards effecting the expected change. She urge the identified stakeholders to utilise the regular preaching at their worship centres to support women developmental issues on increase voice for women Leadership.
She lamented that the bureaucratic barricade that hinders women participation in the elections and urge the three tiers of Government to put in place Conducive empowerment for women.

“The rights of women must not be tampered and addressed as human issues. Women participation in politics is very fundamental,” she said.

Mrs Oluremi Chiroma, representative of INEC in Kwara, who commended FOMWAN for their effective mobilization and regular update on the INEC Platform on need to collect voters card as step for voting. added that women voice must be heard and should be allowed active participation in Nigerian politics.

Chiroma submitted that women don’t want to be in competition with their male counterparts but partners in the development of the country.

In his reaction, Oba Abdulrazak Iyiolasemi III, the Olojoku of Ojoku land said women must be empowered fir effective partaking in politics adding that majority of women are instrument to electing men in power.

Kwara Youth League lauds Governor AbdulRazaq’ s social investment programmes… throws weight behind his second term bid

League of Kwara Youths Movements Wednesday applauded the social investment programme of the governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq administration describing it as the most extensive and credible programmes.

The group however warned youths in the state not to give saboteurs a chance to operate ahead of the 2023 general elections so as not to rob them of the benefits of the administration.

Addressing a World Press Conference in Ilorin, convener of the group who is also National Vice President of the Youth Council of Nigeria, Comrade Akoshile Mukhtar, said the league had assessed the policies and projects of the AbdulRazaq’s administration and concluded that he deserved a second term as governor.

He listed the major strides of the AbdulRazaq’s administration in youth engagement, education, infrastructure, health, economy amongst others as second to non in the history of the state.

He said the league appraisal was the “out come of one week independent assessment of the programmes, policies and projects of the Kwara state government that is spread across the three Senatorial District of the state.

“The governor has also shown himself to be for the downtrodden in society through Establishment of Kwara State Social Investment Program (KWASSIF), which is the most extensive social investment programme in the history of Nigeria that is driven by innovative data collected over time. KWASSIP remains the only state social investment programme to have components targeted specifically at the elderly, unemployed, petty traders, and children who are fed in kindergarten. KWASSIP, which deployed globally accepted strategies of capacity building and direct cash transfer, has reached over 100 thousand individual and business beneficiaries.

“It is on this basis that we put our stamp of approval on the good works of our dear Governor and call on all and sundry to support the programmes he has put in place for the development of our dear state. We call on the youth to ensure that saboteurs are not given room to operate and try to rob us of the benefits of the unprecedented scale of people centric policies, programmes and projects that this state has witnessed in the last four years. We shall continue to monitor and hold leadership accountable to the people at all times”, he added.

A renowned entrepreneur, Pillar Ayo Adepoju who is in the race for Ifelodun/Offa/Oyun Federal Constituency on the platform of Young Progressive Party (YPP), has declared that he has the mandate of God to contest for the position in the 2023 General Elections.

The Pillar said that he has consistently in the past tried his best to support the less-privileged in his personal capacity, but this is the time for him to take an elective position so that he can contribute his quota and also be able to work with people of like minds to influence policy driven projects that will be beneficial to his people.

The Piller made the comment during an interview with newsmen on Sunday in Ilorin, on his mission and vision for his constituency.

He added that he did not just indicate interest to run for House of Representatives seat to fulfil a personal desire or ambition, but was driven by passion to cause holistic impact on the less privileged. “It is something I’m doing because of a divine call. I am saying that the decision to run for a political office is not about Pillar Ayo Adepoju alone – it is an instruction from above and the decision of my people”.

“My being in politics today is not my willing but it is to obey the voice of God that said I should go into politics. Then, I say if this is keeping on coming that God said I should go into politics, I will go.

“My people of Ifelodun/Offa/Oyun which is my Constituency are also calling on me to enter into politics to make my own contribution to the development of my community. I see this place as an avenue to show case what God has been using me for in other parts of the Country.

“Having NGO is not that I want to join politics. That’s me, I want to help people, I want to contribute to people, to make impact in others,” he added.

Pillar said that through his foundation, Pillar and Vision Foundation (PVF) he has been committed to its mission of banishing poverty among Nigerians through activities that promote capacity building and self-reliance.

According to him, the general aim of the PVF is to liberate people from oppression and poverty through programmes that have been carefully designed to stimulate productivity and financial freedom.

“Through my personal effort many people have been rescued from oppression, access to comprehensive health care, financial empowerment, securing of bright future for young people, establishment of ties with influential people and transition from wretchedness to riches.

“I have also been involved in philanthropy helping to make life easy for those I can reach in my own unique way,” he stressed.

Ayo Adepoju hails from Ope in Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara State. He is from humble background, having attended Ipe Baptist Primary School, after which he proceeded to Ipe Secondary School, Ipe. He is also a graduate of English Education, at the prestigious University of Ibadan.

Today, he owns Companies with different branches across the Federation. He is into Oil and Gas and Real Estate Management.
